This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst remaining two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.

Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.

Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowances and hours.

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

We are excited to announce a unique opportunity for a Workshop Manager at Joint Transport Service (JTS) within Surrey & Sussex Police. As a Workshop Manager you will be a key player in the provision of vehicle service arrangements for JTS. Your role is pivotal in ensuring the design and management of services that achieve safe, efficient and cost-effective preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis and repair. We take pride in granting our employees access to the most technologically advanced vehicle equipment in the blue light industry, empowering you to drive excellence in your role.

Under the umbrella of autonomy, you will have the authority to make decisions aligned with the department strategy, and will welcomed to add value by suggesting enhanced ways of working and improved processes. Your contribution will play a crucial role in improving efficiency, increasing productivity and delivering the best service to our stakeholders.

Your responsibilities will span a wide range, from the allocation and supervision of workshop personnel to maintaining liaison with operational police personnel to minimise downtime. Safety is our top priority, and you will be responsible for ensuring high standards are maintained in the workshops at all times, implementing health and safety management inspections.

In additional to the technical aspects, we value the development and wellbeing of our staff. Your role involves close management and personal development reviews, contributing to staff development both technically and personally. Possession of an industry recognised qualification is desirable.

Staying abreast of industry notifications and maintaining records of technical manufacturers recall programme are integral components of the role. You will be involved in examining and providing technical reports on vehicle conditions and defects, ensuring vehicle health checks and quality checks are undertaken.

Financial responsibility comes with the role, with oversight of the stock levels, labour recovery, and parts expenditure of the workshop.

Beyond the technical and financial aspects, your role extends to building relationships with external stakeholders. Obtaining and scrutinising estimates for repairs from garages and make necessary arrangements for work, in consultation with the Engineering Standards Manager, adds a dynamic dimension to your responsibilities.

Skills & Experience

 

City and Guilds Motor Vehicle Technician Cert Pts 1, 2 and 3 (Full Tech Cert) or, City and Guilds Full mechanics certificate (NVQ 3)

City and guilds, NVQ or recognised equivalent in Vehicle Automotive Engineering

IMI Senior Manager Certification

Relevant and extensive experience in workshop management

Well-developed team building skills.

Good budget planning and monitoring skills

Planning and analytical skills

Well-developed communications skills, verbal, written and group presentational.

Competent with IT office solutions
