The Role

Could you help us to expand our exciting and diverse volunteer programme?

The scope and contribution of volunteering in Surrey Police is growing. We now have hundreds of volunteers supporting our police force in many different ways - Special Constables (or Volunteer Police Officers), Police Support Volunteers and Volunteer Police Cadets and Cadet Leaders.

The number of hours our volunteers contribute to policing in Surrey increases year on year - from over 39,000 hours in 2018 to over 55,000 hours in 2021; but the impact our volunteers have is far greater than simply the hours they dedicate to Surrey Police and the communities we serve.

Volunteers bring many things to our organisation - talent, skills, advice, experience, support, energy, enthusiasm and much more…. These are just some of the reasons we need to provide the best support we can to all our volunteers to ensure they are fully integrated and valued across the force. To help us do this, we are looking to recruit two coordinators to join our volunteering team.

This role will attract an unsocial hours payment due to the requirement to work evenings and weekends (all members of the team are expected to work flexibly to meet our volunteers’ needs).

Key Responsibilities

We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated team players who can balance a varied and challenging workload.

Your main responsibilities will be to provide coordination and administrative support across all of our long-term volunteering roles (Special Constables, Police Support Volunteers and Volunteer Police Cadets). You will also help develop and support our short-term volunteering opportunities such as work experience and student placements schemes. Once you have settled into the role, there may be the opportunity to specialise in one or more of these areas.

In addition to your coordination and administrative responsibilities, examples of the day to day tasks you will be expected to carry out include:
• welcoming volunteers to the force
• acting as a point of contact for volunteers, internal and external stakeholders/partners
• organising, attending and supporting events
• interviewing and assessing volunteer and placement applicants
• managing data within systems and spreadsheets

You can find out more about the specific responsibilities within the role profile attached below.

Skills & Experience

We are looking for individuals who understand and recognise the value of volunteering and will take pride in everything they do to support our volunteers. Previous experience of working with volunteers and/or young people would be beneficial, but this is not essential.

We will teach you everything you need to know to succeed in this role, but there are still some skills and experience that we are looking for from the outset. You will need to have experience of managing a varying workload, working independently and as part of a team, with enthusiasm and commitment. Your flexible and positive approach will enable you to support the team and our volunteers whenever and wherever necessary.

Great communication skills are essential for this role and you should be comfortable engaging with a range of stakeholders/partners in various different ways as this will help you to build and maintain the working relationships you will need to succeed.

Our messaging is a key part of the work we do; you will develop material on and offline to attract volunteers and promote the contribution our volunteers make to the force. A practical understanding of communication channels, particularly social media, would therefore be advantageous.

More information about the skills and experience you need for this position can be found within the attached role profile.

Diversity Statement

We are only as good as our people. It's really important that our officers and staff can be themselves in the workplace and we know that as an organisation we'll grow from the variety of thinking, approach and skills that diversity brings; all of which help us deliver a better policing service. We strive to ensure how we deliver our services, provide information and how we recruit is open and accessible to all.

We have multiple staff support groups who help to improve our understanding of minority issues and ensure they are reflected in our work. We are proud members of the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index and Disability Confident, a signatory of the Race at Work Charter and aligned with the Armed Forces Covenant and the HeForShe movement.

We value the differences that people bring from all backgrounds and communities. Regardless of age, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression, disability, social status or religious beliefs, we would love to hear from you.
