The Role & Key Responsibilities

From your first day with us you will be part of a policing family making a real difference.

It is our mission to identify and protect vulnerable people, prevent and respond to harm and keep people safe.

As a Victim Liaison Volunteer, you will provide support to victims of crime, giving them reassurance and comfort.

The support you provide will be in the form of listening to the effect the crime has had on the individual and providing emotional and practical support, as well as signposting to external agencies that might be able to provide specialist services.

Through your actions, you will make a valuable contribution to reducing impact of crime on individuals and increasing their awareness of support available.

As a Victim Liaison Volunteer your main responsibilities will be to:

  • Support victims emotionally through a variety of methods which best suit the victim
  • Give practical advice to victims of crime
  • Signpost victims to external specialist agencies
  • Send reports of the great work you do into the Victim and Witness Care Unit

Once you have completed your initial training and induction period, most of your volunteering can be carried out remotely, but you will also be required to attend regular meetings and training inputs within police premises, usually at Guildford Police Station or HQ just outside Guildford (any travel or parking expenses you incur will be reimbursed from Surrey's boarders).

* Please note that due to the ongoing training required for this role, this should be considered a long-term volunteer opportunity with a minimum commitment of at least a year.

Skills & Experience

You don’t need specific qualifications or previous experience to apply, but you do need the willingness to help and enough time to dedicate to the role.

You will need to be able to engage with confidence and empathy with people from different backgrounds across Surrey's communities. You will also need great interpersonal and administrative skills, including the ability to use Microsoft Office programmes such as Word and Excel and online meeting platforms such as Teams or Zoom.

To be successful in this voluntary role, you will also need to be able to plan and coordinate key tasks and summarise information into concise and informative updates.

Extensive training will be given to new volunteers with ongoing learning opportunities available.

Why Volunteer With Us?

We take pride in looking after our volunteers, through volunteering you will have the opportunity to:

  • Experience policing first-hand
  • Meet new people and teams
  • Learn and develop your skills
  • Support your local community

We will reimburse any travel expenses you may incur whilst volunteering and we have recognition schemes in place for us to formally show our appreciation for your service.

As a police support volunteer you will have access to financial and mental well-being guidance and support, discounts for everyday spend, our on-site gyms and a range of sports clubs. Volunteering with us will also allow you to apply for other voluntary and paid positions within the Force.
