This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst continuing to be two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.


Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.


Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowance and hours.

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role

As a Vehicle Equipment Technician (VET), you will be one of a team of 6 VETs and you will be responsible for the creation of prototype emergency service vehicle conversions which will include the installation and repair of the Joint Transport Services fleet vehicles. The VET will need to be proficient with all of these aspects which will also include fossil fuel vehicles and ultra low emission (Hydrogen and Electric) vehicles. The role will need to have someone who is able to demonstrate an ability to work on the latest vehicle technology in an environment that demands quality workmanship and commitment to delivering outstanding customer service to a mixture of Emergency Service frontline teams and departments to the public in Surrey & Sussex.

Key Responsibilities

1.To undertake the design of prototype specialist vehicle equipment installations from a user’s requirement with minimal supervision. This will involve the installation and continued maintenance of the equipment required and ensure that it operates in the manner expected without interfering with the vehicle systems.
2. To create JTS standard format Visio wiring drawings for the Vehicle Technician in the Service Delivery Workshop to carry out diagnostic checks and make basic repairs. The document is then signed off by the either the Vehicle Equipment Manager, Fleet Engineer or Service Development Manager.
3. To undertake the design of components using Soft Works CAD drawing system for 3D printing which are manufactured on the JTS 3D printers and installed in the vehicles to fit emergency light units and switches without damaging the vehicle dashes.
4. To be responsible for the installation of new and used specialist vehicle equipment into Motorcycles, RPU Unmarked vehicles and specialist surveillance vehicles while ensuring that the systems work as expected.
5. To repair and maintain specialist vehicle equipment such as Communication System, ANPR, CCTV and Vehicle Telemetry.
6.To collaborate with Stores Team Leader with their specialist knowledge to ensure that the current Stock and Parts requirements, are at the correct level and that any system that is due to become obsolete is managed accordingly and the subsequent stock holding is reduced to minimise any wastage.
7.To provide specialist advice, knowledge and guidance in how to use the specialist equipment to the operational end user teams and other JTS colleagues who may have to work on the equipment or report back on its status/progress to the forces.
8. Ensuring that high standards of safety are maintained in the workshops at all times. This includes the local implementation of H&S management systems and inspections. Escalating any identified risks to the relevant person or person’s.
9. To maintain and record accurately all Technical conversion and equipment installation information in a user-friendly document which is supplied to the vehicle operator and held on the JTS Knowledge Hub.
10.Undertake other duties appropriate to the grade and character of work as may be reasonably required, including specific duties of a similar or lesser graded post.

Skills & Experience

QUALIFICATIONS:
ESSENTIAL
City and Guilds Motor Vehicle Technician Cert Pts 1, 2 and 3 (Full Tech Cert) or, City and Guilds Full mechanics certificate (NVQ 3), or electrical, Radio / Communication or Electronic qualification or equivalent Military Qualification. City and guilds, NVQ or recognised equivalent in Vehicle Automotive Engineering IMI Level 2 Electric & Hybrid Automotive Engineering or equivalent, well evidenced electric and hybrid engineering experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
Relevant experience in a blue light fleet, conversion & system maintenance preferably Police or military.
Excellent level of competency with IT office solutions. Well evidenced and proven experience in using all the design and printing function of the 3D (Soft Work) programmes.
Proven experience of creating bespoke vehicle equipment / conversion wiring diagram using Microsoft Visio and Word/ and Microsoft Publisher to create user manuals / repair manuals. Proven understanding of H&S regulations which include, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) 1998, Lifting Operation and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) & Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulation (PUWER) 1998.
Excellent communication skills with experience of engaging stakeholders and external suppliers and the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships. Comprehensive experience in and understanding of the criteria and standards relating to the installation of overt and covert Police equipment into both marked and unmarked vehicles Good experience of working effectively as part of a team and also able to work effectively on own initiative.
Proven ability in problem solving and working under pressure with minimal supervision Excellent organisation skills with the ability to continually prioritise own workload and work to strict timescales.
Good knowledge of radio technology and antenna installation, ideally including ability to undertake programming Computer based control and ANPR (Automatic Number-Plate Recognition) and understanding and ability to conduct CCTV downloading. Training can be provided if necessary.
Well evidenced ability to negotiate and influence others and proven ability to articulate complex information relevant to specialist equipment in a confident, clear and succinct manner.
The Vehicle Equipment Technician must be in possession of a current full UK driving licence and be expected to travel to external and internal workshop premises and road test vehicles as part of this role.
