The Role
The Road Policing Unit (RPU) across Surrey and Sussex is committed to reducing the numbers of people killed and seriously injured on the roads and protecting the Strategic Road Network from disruption, criminality and terrorism.
This vacancy is based out of Caterham.
- You will provide a visible presence by carrying out designated and proactive patrols, Fatal 5 checks and using intelligence and / or ANPR information to deter crime, reassure the community and reduce fear of crime.
- Control the scene of road incidents, including those which may be fatal, serious and life changing, in line with JESIP principles, to support a safe working environment and to preserve evidence.
- Attend, conduct and investigate the primary investigation of road related incidents.
- Use specialist driving skills to provide tactical resolution options for the Force.
- Provide expertise on drink drug driving legislation to support road safety, investigation and prosecution.
Key Responsibilities
To be aware of the relevant casualty reduction sites and be familiar with the specialist equipment and tactics used to promote road safety.
Supporting the NPCC calendar for national initiatives to tackle the Fatal 5
Be familiar with legislation and processes to deal with instances of dangerous, inconsiderate and anti-social driver behaviour.
Aid the detection of crime and gathering evidence in traffic related investigations as well as supporting divisional colleagues.
Have a clear understanding of the reporting and investigating procedures of all collisions as some investigations are retained and investigated on the department.
Skills & Experience
You must have successfully completed your probationary period.
You must be able to make decisions based upon you own initiative and with minimal supervision and also be able to work as part of a team.
You must display a high level of interpersonal skills and project confidence in the handling of situations.
- You must understand that RPU officers have to attend a high proportion of potentially stressful incidents which may include:
- Life threatening and fatal collisions and vehicle fires.
- Viewing and physical contact with badly injured, dying and dead adults and children.
- Dealing with very distressed and agitated victims and offenders
- Delivering death messages and information to bereaved next of kin, relatives and friends.
RPU officers must have the ability to acknowledge and recognise such issues as likely sources of stress in their everyday work and must be prepared to address any difficulties promptly with the support of their line manager.
You must be competent in file building and have an investigative mindset.
You must display that you are motivated and proactive.
You must be at least a standard response permit holder.
Successful applicants will be subject to a probationary period within RPU which is normally six months and complete a Learner package.
Successful applicants will be expected to take on a secondary role of either a Family Liaison Officer (assisting families following a fatal collision) or to become an advanced interviewer.

Application & Selection Process
This recruitment process will be based on a progressive process as follows:
1. Application/ Paper sift - this will be reviewed against your Line Manager's comments but also focusing on the ‘Code of Ethics’, and ‘Competency values Framework’ , applicants are required to complete a 500 word written declaration within their application form based on the following statement: “Evidence how you have contributed to policing over the last 12 months and how this approach could be of benefit to RPU.”
Assessment day comprising of: -
1. Two questions relating to the Competency Values Framework
2. Review of an evidential video of traffic offences and completion of a Traffic Offence Report (TOR)
3. A presentation (maximum of 10 minutes) demonstrating the applicant’s knowledge, understanding and experience of dealing with ‘Fatal 5’ offences
