The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role

Surrey Police are looking to recruit a part time (15 hours per week) telephone researcher to engage those who have previously reported a DA incident (and potentially other crimes) in order to obtain their views and opinions on various issues in relation to policing in Surrey. This is part of a Home Office requirement.

We are looking for someone who can conduct this activity appropriately and professionally and thereby promote a positive image of Surrey Police. There will also be an admin process prior to conducting the telephone interviews.

The successful applicant will be an excellent communicator, have strong administrative skills and have basic knowledge of MS Excel and MS Word.

Key Responsibilities

1. To conduct telephone interviews with named service users following a fixed survey script and structure, facilitated via software on Force systems.

2. To maintain professional, courteous and sympathetic attitude and be able to demonstrate the range of skills of a telephone interviewer, e.g. to probe for answers when the respondent is unclear or hesitant utilising interpersonal skills, managing the length of call whilst being an ambassador for the Force.

3. To use discretion and demonstrate sensitivity appropriate to the nature of the call and the needs of the respondent.

4. To contribute towards achieving pre-determined target numbers of interviews over a given period of time, whilst being aware that this is not always achievable and the team strives to achieve quality over quantity of interviews.

5. To record the results of each interview into the relevant software accurately.

6. To take responsibility for optimising own performance by participating in performance monitoring exercises and other quality assurance exercises.

7. To participate in training and other personal development exercises relevant to the duties and responsibilities of the post.

8. To undertake the necessary pre-screening safeguarding checks prior to making calls. This will involve, with the aid of the team making decisions around who is appropriate to conduct the survey and will require the applicant to have a good attention to detail.

Skills & Experience

Essential skills or experience:
1. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate at all levels, particularly on the telephone
2. Customer focus.
3. Planning and coordination skills
4. Reasonable knowledge of MS Excel and Word.

Desirable skills or experience:
1. Experience of working with victims of crime.
2. Previous telephone experience, this may be as a researcher/call handler etc.
