The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role

Digital devices and information communication technology are present in almost every investigation the police undertake. These range from complex corporate computer networks and high capacity server/workstations, to mobile phone handsets, games consoles, digital CCTV systems and satellite navigation.
Applications are now invited for the post of Technical Assistant - Digital Forensic Team within the Surrey Digital Forensic Team, (DFT).
The Technical Assistant will provide technical support and assistance to Digital Forensic Analysts and investigators including the forensic imaging of hard disk drives.


Key Responsibilities



The successful candidates will initiate the imaging of digital devices and pass findings in an auditable way for assessment, verification and reporting by the Digital Forensic Analyst. They will also be accountable for exhibit handling and administrative duties to assist Digital Forensic Analysts. A sound knowledge of the governing legislation, procedures and policies is therefore essential.

The Technical Assistant will also assist analysts with the technical administrative tasks to ensure efficiency of workflows including the effective utilisation of work-stations.

Skills & Experience

To be successful in this role the post holder will have a good standard of secondary education at ‘GCSE’ Level or equivalent; or have the equivalent by recent, relevant experience. They will also be IT literate and demonstrate their experience of using a wide variety of computer software applications.
It is essential that the candidate possesses an understanding of digital imaging techniques as well as a willingness to learn specific forensic computer software applications.
The successful candidate will display an aptitude for continuous self development and demonstrating evidence of working methodically preferably within an investigative environment. For more information see the Role Profile.

As the post holder will be exposed to sensitive and sometimes distressing images / information, candidates will be subject to a psychological assessment check before they begin the role, (and whilst in post). This forms a baseline for further checks but also ensures people are fit to undertake the role at the outset.
