Vacancy Information

Could you make a difference to the next generation by becoming a volunteer police cadet leader in your community? We are looking for enthusiastic adult leaders to join each of our volunteer police cadet units across Surrey.

Our Volunteer Police Cadet (VPC)* Scheme is open to any young person aged 13-18 and living in Surrey, including those who may be vulnerable to the influences of crime and/or social exclusion.

Our cadet leaders are police officers, police staff and police support volunteers who together form a unit leadership team committed to the delivery of the VPC programme through weekly evening sessions and weekend engagements.

If you would like to support young people in Surrey and become part of a dedicated team of leaders, this could be the perfect volunteer opportunity for you!

* The VPC is the nationally recognised police uniformed youth group throughout England and Wales; further information about the scheme can be found at vpc.police.uk.

The Role

Our cadet units provide a safe environment within which young people can strive towards their goals, support each other and realise their potential to contribute as active citizens.

Throughout the programme, our valued leaders support cadets to broaden their knowledge of policing and social action (volunteering) in the community. Leaders introduce cadets to opportunities and issues, challenging them to develop ideas and implement solutions that will make their communities safer and more cohesive.

As positive role models, our cadet leaders play an important part in our cadets personal development.

Key Responsibilities

As a cadet leader, you will be involved in the following:

• Delivering the cadet curriculum
• Providing administrative support
• Maintaining records of meeting and event attendance, activities and outcomes
• Conducting relevant safeguarding and risk assessments and monitor compliance
• Helping to coordinate social action (volunteering) in the community

All our cadet leaders are expected to complete training in safeguarding and a DBS check in addition to our police security checks (vetting).

Skills & Experience

As a cadet leader, team working is really important. You will also need to have:
• Enthusiasm and confidence to inspire and motivate young people
• Great communication skills
• Confidence with basic IT
• A flexible approach to volunteering

We will provide you with all the training you need to carry out your role as a leader, but experience in one or more of the following areas would be beneficial:
• Working or volunteering with young people (including an understanding of safeguarding)
• Operational policing
• Delivering and/or developing training
• Mentoring or coaching
