The Role

As an engaging and enthusiastic surveillance operative you will be deployed within Surrey and Sussex, and where the need arises, within the South East Region. Your main role will be to covertly monitor subjects who are actively involved in Serious and Organised Crime. You will gather intelligence and evidence on those subjects to help prove their involvement in those offences. Our operations are often protracted and you must be prepared to work long and unsocial hours, sometimes away from home.
You will need to be flexible as you will need to react to fast moving investigations throughout both forces and the South East Region.
You will be an expert in your area, being able to offer tactical knowledge and advice to senior officers in fast moving investigations.
You will be expected to form part of the on call Rota for the South East Region on call Crime in Action team.

Key Responsibilities

To covertly undertake Observations and Surveillance as the teams’ Motorcyclist in order to secure evidence and/or intelligence in support of Cluster/Force/Regions intelligence operations.
When required, to undertake the role of an operational commander, ensuring that surveillance operatives are fully briefed prior to deployment and to ensure all opportunities to gather evidence and/or intelligence are identified.
To ensure that the intelligence gathered during the course of surveillance is disseminated efficiently and effectively.
To maintain knowledge and awareness of significant changes in criminal law and procedure and developments in surveillance techniques, training and equipment.
To be responsible and accountable for the care and maintenance of equipment and vehicles.
The development of professional contacts within other agencies. To maintain knowledge of their working practices and identify opportunities to provide and receive specialist assistance when necessary.
To report directly to the Detective/Police Sergeant on matters regarding procedure, staffing issues and equipment, ensuring that all matters are dealt with effectively and in line with current guidelines.
To carry out any other duties as may be determined by the Detective Inspector – Covert intelligence Development.
To be part of the on call South East Region Crime in Action Surveillance Team.

Skills & Experience

To be in possession of a current Q1 (Level 1) surveillance licence
To be in possession of a current Police Advanced car licence.
To be in possession of a current Police Advanced motorcycle licence.
To be in possession of a current Q2/Q200 Surveillance Motorcyclist licence.
To be in possession of a Vetting level of SC or above
Has attended a national/local log and disclosure course
Has a good working knowledge of relevant guidance within the ACPO Surveillance Manual 2006, including RIPA and associate authorities.
