This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst remaining two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.

Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.

Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowances and hours.

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role & Key Responsibilities

Operations Command is a dynamic and forward-thinking department delivering specialist policing capability to both divisional colleagues and our communities across Surrey and Sussex.

We are seeking a highly organised, detail-orientated and proactive Strategic Support Officer to join our Command. This role is crucial to the smooth running of our operations and requires a professional who thrives in a fast-paced collaborative environment. You will support the Chief Superintendent in managing strategic and departmental risks, liaising with a range of stakeholders to address any emerging issues. Key to success is the line management of our secretarial team who are the executive engine to the department and ensure that Command continue to receive high-quality support.

The successful candidate will either be educated to degree level and/ or have equivalent experience in either executive support roles or an operational policing environment. You will have extensive experience of writing and delivering high quality reports and presenting these to diverse audiences. With a solid background in project management and administration, you will ensure deadlines and key deliverables are met. With the ability to lead and manage a team, you will set standards and enable staff to develop and deliver excellence.

Skills & Experience

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience either in executive support roles or an operational policing context
  • Extensive experience of writing high quality reports such as options papers, business cases, reviews, executive summaries, and presenting information clearly and precisely.
  • Substantial experience of administration, efficient ways of working, organisation and running projects and multiple tasks simultaneously. Proven ability to deliver multiple projects, and reports at all levels.
  • Experience of interpreting and presenting performance and ability to interpret requirements across two different forces and systems. Ability to offer tactical interventions to improve performance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to liaise effectively with individuals at all levels.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
  • Experience of attending meetings at all levels and presenting information.
  • Experience and ability to supervise, develop and coordinate staff.
  • Used to working in a fast paced, environment and have a flexible, calm, professional approach.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of spreadsheets, presentation and report writing packages such as MS Office and MS Teams.
  • Supervisory level experience is desirable.
  • Experience of command /strategic support, and meeting fluid and changing demands of head of department is desirable.
  • An occupational understanding of policing performance related matters is desirable.
  • Experience of accessing multiple (police) systems and methods of recording to extract performance and operational information is desirable.
