Vacancy Information

Following the recent development of a rank structure in the Sussex Police Special Constabulary to support of the continued growth and strategic ambition of the Special Constabulary Sergeant, we would like to invite applications for promotion to the role of special sergeant prior to a posting panel process. We are looking for enthusiastic, flexible and motivated individuals who will provide visible and accessible supervision for all special constables within their team.

The post is open to all special constables internally and externally who have independent patrol status.

Key Responsibilities

As a special sergeant you will provide leadership and to special constables within your team, whilst enhancing the integration between your special constables and regular officers. You will be responsible for the professional management of specials constables, ensuring that all our specials have a positive and rewarding volunteering experience with Sussex Police.

You will contribute to visible local policing by supporting the planning and deployment of Special Constables in accordance with divisional/command or local needs to tackle problems and priorities within Sussex Police’s communities. Through the development of relationships with your district, you will enable effective partnership working and ensure that the Special Constabulary is considered within all resource and planning activity.

As a valued member of the Special Constabulary Management Team, you will contribute to future planning activity for areas such as the attraction, recruitment and training of new special constables, as well as the retention and development of our existing specials, ensuring individual needs are considered and talent is nurtured.

Skills & Experience

As an independent patrol special constable, you will lead by example and readily identify opportunities to provide operational support within your district. You will need to have the ability to develop and motivate individuals to achieve their individual and shared team aims.

Your interpersonal skills will enable you to build relationships with your special constables and regular colleagues and your flexible professional approach will enable you deliver the best possible outcomes for the specials in your team and Sussex’s communities.
