The Role
Do you wish to develop your investigative skills within a small specialist unit?
An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Detective Constable or Police Constable for the role of Investigating Officer within the Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) based at Haywards Heath. A Police Constable candidate will be considered it they have passed or are willing to take the NIE as this is a requirement for the role.
The SCIU is a collaborated unit within Operations Command, which investigates fatal, life threatening, life changing and complex road traffic collisions in Sussex and Surrey.
As an Investigating Officer you will be responsible for managing several investigations through to their conclusion.
You will report to one of the Sergeant Lead Investigators also based at Haywards Heath and will work a shift pattern including late shifts and weekends. There is some flexibility with regards to working location dependent on operational needs.
Key Responsibilities
• Investigate several, sometimes complex, investigations at any one time
• Work closely with colleagues, other departments and external agencies
• Interview witnesses and obtain detailed statements
• Prepare disclosure and conduct or assist with interviews of suspects
• Attend post-mortem examinations
• Maintain a comprehensive record of case progression
• Prepare files for the Crown Prosecution Service and HM Coroner
• Attend hearings at Magistrates, Crown and Coroners Courts
Skills & Experience
This is an interesting and rewarding role, but applicants should be aware that the role does carry an increased exposure to trauma on a regular basis, and a requirement to deal with families and victims who are going through a life changing event.
• You should have a high degree of resilience. Welfare is monitored by line managers and screening by Occupational Health
• You will have proven investigative skills at PIP2 level
• If applying as a Police Constable it is expected that you are willing to sit the National Investigators Examination (NIE) in the future to become PIP2 accredited. (Or currently hold a valid pass in the NIE but have yet to undertake a PIP 2 role)
• The complex nature of our investigations requires a high degree of attention to detail.
• You must have excellent proven verbal and written communication skills
• You must have high levels of self-motivation and the ability to manage a workload with minimal supervision
• There will sometimes be a requirement to amend your working hours depending on operational requirement
• You must have the ability to work well in a team environment, considering and valuing the contributions of other team members
• You must have good general IT skills and a knowledge of police systems
• You will have an understanding of the CPIA and disclosure obligations
• A working knowledge of Road Traffic legislation is desirable
• It is desirable that you are qualified as a Tier 2 Serious & Complex interviewer, or have a willingness to undergo training
• You must hold a full driving licence for cars and hold at least a valid BDA driving permit
• You must have a current JRFT pass

Additional Information
The selection process will be by way of a 500 word reasoned argument evidencing what skills you will bring to the role, your suitability and experience. Candidates will be considered against this and short listed for a competency based interview. Applications must be submitted by the closing date of Friday 6th May 2022.
