Division / Department - Information Technology (Joint) Grade - Grade 11 Status - Full Time Contract Type - Fixed Term Contract Salary Grade Range - £32,796 - £36,369 Working Hours - 37.0 Hours per Week The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role

An opportunity to join the Sussex & Surrey Police Digital, Data and Technology Department, specialising in the management and installation of servers, storage and data centre infrastructure, and developing the future of the IT Department's data centre estate. This role will be either part of the operational IT Infrastructure team covering a range of data centre technologies, or assigned to a specific programme of work that revolves around the adoption of cloud services such as Office 365, Exchange Online, Microsoft Azure and Windows 10.

 

This is a two-year fixed term contract. 

Key Responsibilities

You will be involved in:

 

  • Support and administration of several hundred servers, including Microsoft Windows, Linux, and UNIX systems
  • Installation of server hardware into data centre facilities
  • Responding to incidents and customer assistance requests relating to the server estate
  • Routine monitoring and maintenance of servers, backups, and associated infrastructure technologies
  • Carrying out upgrades and refreshes, and looking for opportunities to improve our estate
  • Assisting with project work and building systems to support new policing applications
  • Being involved in project work, giving expert guidance and assisting with architectural decisions
  • Investigating complex faults to support other IT teams
  • Solving problems and providing options during IT systems build and testing
  • Provide advice and expertise to colleagues within and outside the team
  • Work with a range of stakeholders to identify how to meet their needs, representing IT as an expert advisor, in to order to deliver improved processes and systems
  • Liaise with colleagues across other technical areas to understand the risks and technical requirements in their area, in order to develop and deliver integrated solutions
  • Liaison with Information Security to ensure appropriate measures are in place, systems and practices adhere to required protocols and policies and procedures meet required standards
  • Support the development of colleagues through the provision of technical direction, coaching, and information sharing to contribute to the organisational knowledge base
  • Assess modifications to existing IT infrastructure initiated by technology specialists are properly risk assessed and controlled, in order to deliver change in line with change control governance
  • Undertake complex maintenance, support, and change work that has been escalated from the team to contribute to the delivery of an effective and responsive IT service
  • Monitor the provision of support and service for key systems by technical colleagues within their specialism, for example ensuring routine maintenance is undertaken, in order to provide reliable and consistent service to operational policing
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement, for example by monitoring trends and incidents, in order to reduce recurrences of problems and to deliver a consistent and reliable service to the Force
  • Undertake additional work/assignments as may be assigned by supervisors and management from time to time in order to support and enhance the smooth operation of the IT department and its areas of responsibility
  • To contribute to and help deliver the department's Digital Policing strategy

Skills & Experience

Technical experience required:

  • Server operating systems, hardware and management software.
  • Tools and built-in facilities that allow specification, installation, configuration, optimisation, hardening, monitoring and patching of server OS and hardware.
  • Storage technologies such as SAN/NAS, preferably NetApp and/or Dell. Virtualisation, including VMware vSphere.
  • Server hardware and data centre management.
  • Microsoft Windows Server, including Active Directory and affiliated technologies.
  • A good understanding of IP networking and security is essential.
  • Cloud technologies such as Office 365, Microsoft Azure and Exchange Online are highly desirable.

 

It is essential that the postholder has/is:

 

  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent) with a professional qualification in IT or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in a wide range of technologies, technical tools, analytical and problem solving approaches.
  • Significant experience and understanding of the theoretical concepts underpinning their specialism in order to provide technical oversight to technical staff.
  • Excellent communication skills with experience of engaging stakeholders and the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Proficiency in coaching and supporting others in order to develop the technical capability of the team.
  • A high level of personal resilience and self-motivation.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills with excellent attention to detail.

It is desirable that the postholder has/is:

  • Detailed knowledge of Police regulations, standards, structures, services and IT systems/processes/platforms.

  • A current full UK Driving Licence and must be flexible to work across both the Surrey and Sussex sites to perform their duties. The postholder must be willing to undertake a driving assessment should they wish to utilise an unidentifiable police vehicle rather than their personal vehicle.

  • The postholder will be required to work from both Surrey and Sussex sites and therefore will be expected to travel to location in both counties as part of this role.
