This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst remaining two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.
Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.
Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowances and hours.

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role & Key Responsibilities
From your first day with us you will be part of a policing family making a real difference.
It is our mission to identify and protect vulnerable people, prevent and respond to harm and keep people safe.
A rare opportunity has opened for you to join the Major Crime Review Team. We are looking for applications from individuals who have extensive experience leading / investigating major crime / serious crime / public protection investigations. Please note the majority of reviews we currently undertake are statutory within the Public Protection arena. You are able to choose your work location - agile working from your nearest Surrey / Sussex police establishment or working from home or a hybrid of both. We do not have a team office. This what we do:

Review current & unsolved homicide and other major or serious crime incidents/investigations, auditing and analysing the processes used, consulting with staff and identifying any further lines of enquiry, within prescribed timescales. You can maintain PIP3 & PIP4 if you hold these accreditations.

Carry out research, complete chronologies, consult with staff and compile Individual Management Reviews (IMR) for statutory Domestic Abuse Related Death Reviews, Rapid Reviews, Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews, Safeguarding Adult Reviews in accordance with statutory guidance. Identifying learning and promoting good practice. Working to strict time scales.

Lead and conduct reviews of critical incidents as requested by chief officers.

Present review findings to senior leaders and multi-agency review panels.

Liaise with other forces and outside agencies and represent the force at regional and national review conferences.
Skills & Experience
In applying for this role you should be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:
- Proven investigative track record in criminal investigations with recent experience of managing, overseeing or reviewing major / serious crime investigations.
- Experience of partnership working, public protection procedures and the statutory review processes.
- Knowledge of current criminal law, Criminal Procedures and Investigations Act, Human Rights Act and investigative procedures.
- Proven ability to influence and persuade senior officers to accept recommended changes.
- Possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to produce clear, concise, accurate and logical reports and present findings.
- Working knowledge of what type of support services and technical support are available to assist in the investigation of major / serious crime investigations.
- Possess an enquiring mind and able to demonstrate the strength of character required to challenge current investigation practices and procedures where appropriate.
- Able to work independently, methodically and meet strict timelines.
- Ability to display sensitivity and empathy in challenging situations.
- Possess excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work closely with and respect the needs of people at all levels within the organisation and with partnerships.

Use Niche and other police systems. Holmes training can be provided. You will be required to attend the national Review Officer training delivered by the College of Policing.
