The Role

The role of Problem Solving Tactical Advisor is an exciting, new opportunity within Surrey Police to shape the way the organisation works with partners to prevent crime and anti-social behaviour.

As one of two tactical advisors, you will carry out research and provide expert information, advice and support to operational policing teams in the running of problem solving initiatives and experiments.

The core purpose of the tactical advisor is to have an in depth understanding of problem solving methodology, which will enable you to support problem solving plan owners by identifying national and international best practice and make recommendations on the most effective approach.

You will also support the Problem Solving Chief Inspector in providing training to front line staff on Problem Solving techniques, and performance monitoring of Problem Solving Plans.

Key Responsibilities

Your main responsibility will be to become an expert in the field of problem oriented policing, understanding and applying the SARA (Scanning, Analysis, Response, Assessment) problem solving model to a broad spectrum of policing issues.

You will support plan owners from all areas of policing by guiding them through the SARA process, researching and identifying relevant best practice from a range of sources to allow the application of innovative, evidence based approaches to tackle the problem at hand.

Working with the dedicated analytical resources in the department, you will be able to identify the root causes driving a particular policing problem, allowing you to work with the plan owner to design and implement a solution dedicated to the particular circumstances of the problem.

You will also use your expert knowledge as a problem solving tactical advisor, to review and provide constructive feedback on problem solving plans from across the organisation. Through this process you will be able to support a performance framework for problem solving, enhancing the skill and knowledge of officers and staff from across Surrey Police to improve the overall effectiveness of the organisation at preventing crime and reducing harm to the public of Surrey.

Skills & Experience

You will be educated to A-Level standard or equivalent qualification.

You will have experience of researching and analysing information from a range of sources, enabling you to make recommendations based on evidence of what is effective.

You will have excellent communication skills, enabling you to work effectively with plan owners of varying ranks and experience, as well as key individuals in partner agencies, inspiring them to adopt new ways of working.

You will need to have the ability to understand how criminological theories and experimental findings can be applied to support police problem solving.

You will have excellent computer skills, with competence in using core business applications (MS Office) and the ability to develop effective use of policing databases.

You must be able to demonstrate that you are self-motivated with the ability to use your initiative to develop your own specialist knowledge in the field of problem solving. This includes developing in depth knowledge of the SARA problem solving model.
