The Role
The Road Policing Unit (RPU) across Sussex and Surrey is committed to reducing the numbers of people killed and seriously injured on the roads and protecting the Strategic Road Network from disruption, criminality and terrorism.
• You will provide a visible presence on the roads by carrying out designated and proactive patrols, Fatal 5 checks and using intelligence and / or ANPR information to deter crime, reassure the community, and reduce fear of crime.
• Control the scene of road incidents, including those which may be fatal, serious and life changing, in line with JESIP principles, to support a safe working environment and to preserve evidence.
• Attend and conduct the primary investigation of road related incidents
• Drive and ride police patrol vehicles to the appropriate level to support the policing of the roads
• Use specialist driving skills and pre-emptive methods, to provide tactical resolution for vehicles that are failing to stop
• Provide expertise on drink drug driving legislation to support road safety, investigation and prosecution
• Promote the free flow of vehicles on the road network and strategic road network
Our mission is to continue to deny criminals the use of the road, reduce casualties and attend and deal with those killed or seriously injured in collisions on all road networks and implement specialist tactics in relation to pursuit management.
Key Responsibilities
To be aware of the relevant casualty reduction sites and be familiar with the specialist equipment and tactics used to promote road safety.
Supporting the NPCC calendar for national initiatives to tackle the Fatal 5
Be familiar with legislation and processes to deal with instances of dangerous, inconsiderate and anti-social driver behavior.
Aid the detection of crime and gathering evidence in traffic related investigations as well as supporting divisional colleagues in crime investigations.
Have a clear understanding of the reporting and investigating procedures of all collisions.
Skills & Experience
You must have at least 2 years experience as a PC and be signed off accordingly.
You must have completed and passed a Standard Car Course
You must be able to make decisions based upon you own initiative and with minimal supervision and also be able to work as part of a team.
You must display a high level of interpersonal skills and project confidence in the handling of situations.
You must understand that RPU officers have to attend a high proportion of potentially stressful incidents which may include:
Life threatening and fatal collisions and vehicle fires
Viewing and physical contact with badly injured, dying and dead adults and children.
Dealing with very distressed and agitated victims and offenders
Delivering death messages and information to bereaved next of kin, relatives and friends.
RPU officers must have the ability to acknowledge and recognise such issues as likely sources of stress in their everyday work and must be prepared to address any difficulties promptly with the support of their line manager.
