The Training Team is looking for a highly organised, dynamic individual to lead a team of training professionals in the planning, delivery and implementation of PIP2 training, spanning our Detective DHEP (Degree Holders Entry Programme), Police Now Detective and all PIP2 Courses delivered within Surrey Police. This role will sit alongside the supervisors who deliver the initial entry routes in line with the Police Education Qualification Framework (PEQF) and will be pivotal in helping the organisation understand the importance of teaching the PIP2 programmes and the benefits that brings to the learners and the divisions/departments in the development of detectives.

The PIP2 Training Supervisors role will act as first-line supervisors for all Trainers within the collaborated team, as well as learners on their courses during their crucial developmental phase.

With the development of a wide range of entry routes and learning pathways, this is a wonderful opportunity to shape the future of Detective training at a dynamic and unprecedented time. The training teams works as part of the broader Learning and Professional Development Department, with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

Clear, effective and timely communication is required with all key stakeholders including the Detectives and Divisional Dedicated investigation teams, Dedicated Coaching Units and Assessors across the Force, as well as our Consortium University Partners. Enabling dynamic and effective blended training leading to a successful learning journey for all learners within the organisation. This is a period of significant change and the supervisors in the Training School will be playing an important part in ensuring the implementation of the programmes is a success.

There is an expectation that the Supervisor will be visible to Trainers, Coaches, Assessors, Key internal and external stakes holders and Learners. To facilitate this, the successful applicant will largely work week day office hours in order effectively manage the training day. However, working occasional later shifts or weekend days may be required online with training demands.

Key Responsibilities

You will act as first-line supervisor for Trainers as well as lease with learners first line managers.

You will have initial line management, responsibility, and oversight of Detective DHEP learners during their initial phase of training. While responsible for your given course or cohort you will also be expected to supervise other courses when required (cover leave/absence etc).

You will be required to identify and share best working practice, delivering training to both students and L&PD colleagues.

Manage high standards of learner support and be dedicated to learner development, identified through effective tracking of learner progress and gap analysis. Identify difficulties that Trainers and Learners are experiencing, and work with them, their divisions, DCU’s, Universities and Assessors to overcome them.

You will write evaluation reports based on sound professional knowledge. You will represent L&PD at local and force level meetings, working with internal and external stakeholders to drive forward the training agenda.

You will ensure that all processes and protocols are adhered to in line with the L&PD Business Plan.  This will include the regular review and retention of training products which are used to support our business.


You will help the organisation understand the importance of teaching the PIP2 programmes and the benefits that brings to the learners and the divisions/departments in the development of detectives.

You will be a credible role model and lead from the front having a positive and engaging approach to their role .

You will be able to provide support, guidance, and advice to all internal L&PD personnel where appropriate in relation to Detective learning programmes, and be able to work closely with the PEQF design team and other relevant stakes holders and teams to ensure a coordinated approach to PIP2 course design.

Skills & Experience

The successful candidate must:

Be PIP 2 Qualified and Accredited.

Have a detailed understanding of PIP 2 Courses.

Level 3 (minimum) qualification in Training or Development or prepared to take this on within the first 6 months in role.

Educated to A-Level standard or equivalent professional qualification Experience in supervising a team including performance management, building and maintain relationships, gaining support from others to achieve goals.

Excellent personal and interpersonal communication skills both verbal and written.

Experience of working in a customer-focussed environment and be skilled in engaging a diverse range of stakeholders, to build relationships that are based on trust, to work collaboratively and to resolve issues.

Experience in future-planning across multiple disciplines Proactive in identifying and solve problems whilst working independently, using a self-disciplined approach to tasks with the ability to be flexible and work to tight timescales.

The ability to deliver performance from limited resources. Experience of or willingness to learn about the new entry routes into Policing and working within a police environment.


It would be also be desirable for applicants to have:

Level 3 qualification in coaching and / or mentoring


The ability to meet any driving requirements in the role of an investigative supervisor.
