Do you think proactively, have a passion for investigation and want to shape an exciting new team within Sussex Police. Are you a highly motivated officer with an eye for detail and an interest in intelligence based products?

As part of Sussex Police’s precept and government funded uplift, an exciting opportunity has emerged for uniform positions within the planned Specialist Enforcement Unit. Focussing on Force priorities, including acquisitive crime and killed or seriously injured collision (KSI) reduction strategies.

The Liaison Officer will play a key role in maximising the effectiveness of the unit through liaising and coordinating with both internal and external partners. Critically you will provide research and development on intelligence products in addition to identifying risk and opportunities for disruption and enforcement, enabling the successful tasking of the unit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with internal and external partners to increase the flow of intelligence, identify priority targets and task resources with the aim of disrupting organised criminality and supporting KSI reduction strategies.
  • Use technology to research crime and criminal intelligence in support of policing objectives.
  • Provide tactical advice regarding the capabilities of Ops Command resources, considering the full range of options.
  • Nominate suitable packages to the Operations Command Tasking and Coordination process, and suggest tactics for development or intervention in order to ensure suitable resources are deployed.
  • Create written briefings, target packages and present information to colleagues where required.
  • Understanding force priorities and take responsibility to deal with these in a proactive and innovative way. In return you will be trained to provide specialist skills including; advanced driving, tactical pursuit and containment (TPAC), Taser, method of entry (MOE), and a range of enforcement methods to support our mission of protecting communities, catching criminals and delivering an outstanding service.

Skills & Experience

  • Evidenced knowledge of investigation techniques and relevant legislation
  • Proven track record of proactive policing ability
  • Experience in problem solving and partnership working
  • Full working knowledge of Niche and ANPR, and a good understanding of Microsoft products including Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Good interpersonal written and presentation skills
  • Ability to flexibly prioritise tasks depending on risk and opportunity under minimum supervision
  • Able to assimilate large quantities of data into national Intelligence model products and documents
  • Ability to manage crime file workload and prosecution papers
  • You should hold a current standard response and initial pursuit permit OR have previously held such within the last 5 years.
  • Due to the nature of this team, Category A (fully operational) officers are required for this unit, with current staff safety and first aid accreditation.
  • Advanced driver / TPAC / MOE / STO / skills are desirable but training will be provided if you do not possess these skills.
  • If you have not previously held an advanced driving permit a check drive as to your suitability for advanced training will be conducted by the Driver Training Unit as part of the selection process.

The Specialist Enforcement Unit will be dedicated to proactive policing at a Force level, working with other units to deny criminals the use of the roads and support the force control strategy, specifically; organised acquisitive crime and the reduction of killed or seriously injured collisions on our roads through visible presence and enforcement. Targeting high risk high harm offenders thereby protecting the people of Sussex and those most vulnerable.

The team will consist of:

  • One Inspector
  • Three uniform Sgt’s managing 27 police officers
    • 3 of the 24 PC’s will be a Liaison Officer developing taskings for the unit
    • Operational Dog handlers will be attached to each team (3 in total)
  • One Detective Sgt managing six detective constables

Teams will work a shift pattern based around core shifts of earlies and lates, with an expectation of flexibility due to the nature of the role.

We are keen to promote diversity and flexibility in line with the role such as job sharing and part time (full shifts only).

Please note that all expressions of interest must be agreed through your Line manager prior to applying. To be eligible to apply officers must have completed their probationary period and must not be subject to any live misconduct investigations.

The role will carry a tenure of 2 years.
