As part of Sussex Police’s officer uplift, an exciting opportunity has emerged for four investigation officers within the Specialist Enforcement Unit, focussing on Force priorities, including organised acquisitive crime and KSI (killed or seriously injured) reduction strategies.

The role is designed to give you further grounding in an exciting and developing area of investigations.

As part of the investigative team you will work closely with operational team colleagues, especially the Liaison Officers, to contribute to, provide and build a wide picture of information on tasking’s and threats to our county. From this you will then support investigations into criminality committed by those most intent on causing harm to our wider communities.

We want to offer the flexibility for the successful candidates to develop towards taking the NIE, and enrolling on the investigational pathway through Operations Command towards becoming Detectives. However, if your aspirations are not to become a Detective, then this pathway is not mandatory.

Key Responsibilities

  • Key members of an investigative team supporting a proactive, tasked resource focused on Force priorities including key areas above.
  • Conduct a wide variety of volume crime and support complex investigations taking into account threat, harm and risk. Ensure all case are reviewed in a timely manner with an investigation action plan and all updates are clearly recorded.
  • Together with wider stakeholders, to fully investigate allocated priorities, to ensure that all victims and those identified at risk are offered maximum protection and, to prosecute offenders utilising the road network for criminality.
  • Consistent justified decision making in an intelligence driven environment to maximise investigative opportunities.

The Specialist Enforcement Unit is dedicated to proactive policing at a Force level, working with other units to deny criminals the use of the roads and support the force control strategy, specifically; organised acquisitive crime and the reduction of killed or seriously injured collisions on our roads through visible presence and enforcement. Targeting high risk high harm offenders thereby protecting the people of Sussex and those most vulnerable.

The team consists of:

  • One Inspector
  • 3 uniform Sgt’s managing 27 police officers
    • Three of the 24 PC’s are Liaison Officers developing taskings for the unit
    • Operational Dog handlers will be attached to each team
  • One Detective Sgt managing 2 detective constables and 4 PC investigators

Teams will work a shift pattern based around core shifts of earlies & lates with an expectation of flexibility due to the nature of the role. Details of the shift pattern are available if required. We are keen to promote diversity and flexibility in line with the role profile such as job sharing and part time (full shifts only).

Due to the nature of this team and the need for scene deployment, officers of Category A (fully operational – not on adjusted duties) and Category C (Verbal/physical confrontation would need to be risk assessed but able to work full shifts) are required for this unit.

Skills & Experience

  • Proven decision making capability in an intelligence driven environment to maximise investigative opportunities.
  • Experience of problem-solving and partnership working throughout investigations
  • Knowledge of intelligence models, submissions and analysis of quality intelligence
  • Experienced in end-to-end investigation of cases, desirably involving complex or organised crime.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills in order to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders; colleagues, partner agencies, victims, witnesses and suspects.
  • Demonstrate sound knowledge of criminal law and procedure; particularly involving road traffic, acquisitive crime series and links to organised criminality
  • Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the code of ethics, force policies and procedures and policing professional framework. Maintain standards of conduct and professionalism both within the organisation and when representing Sussex Police externally.

Additional Information

Please note that all expressions of interest must be agreed through your Line manager prior to applying. Your line manager must endorse that you are suitable for this role based on your current performance. To be eligible to apply officers must have completed their probationary period and must not be subject to any live misconduct investigations.

The role will carry a tenure of 2 years.
