This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst continuing to be two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.


Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.


Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowance and hours.

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role

To undertake the registration of specified overseas visitors in compliance with the requirements of the Home Office Immigration Act 1971 and Home Office Policy.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct interviews with overseas visitors and assess their visa application in line with the requirements of the Immigration Act and Home office Policy.

Ascertain that individuals are complying with the conditions of their visa. Gather information and evaluate validity through intuition, examination of supporting documentation, basic research and enquiries of sponsors.

Explain to the overseas visitor the current relevant immigration legislation according to Immigration Rules (Part 10 of the 1971 Home Office Immigration Act) including the verification of identity documents

Maintaining computer records, inputting registration details, searching existing records and databases in order to identify intelligence opportunities. Responsible for submitting any information gleaned is subject of a written intelligence log.

To liaise with venues to organise and conduct interviews of specified overseas visitors to collect information for the purpose of the registration application and to ensure all information is accurate and properly recorded.

Communicate with specified overseas visitors that have failed to comply with the registration requirements set out by legislation and policy. Inform the visitor of the course of action they need to take, endorsing police registration certificates to that effect; and escalating to Government agencies or police colleagues as necessary.

Be responsible for alerting police colleagues of specified overseas visitors suspected of fraudulently obtaining Visas, failing to comply with Visa conditions or otherwise raising concerns.

To search and collate information within set parameters specified by a supervisor regarding specific nationality/immigration queries in order to meet departmental, Home Office or Force requirements.

Maintain efficient working relationships with other departments, police forces and partners in relation to registration matters and to act as the Single Point of Contact (SPOC) for all overseas visitor registration queries within Surrey and Sussex.

Skills & Experience

5 GCSEs grade C or above (or equivalent) to include English and Maths. Valid UK driving license/ability to travel to perform duties.

Knowledge of practices and procedures in relation to relevant Immigration Act Legislation and Home Office policies.

Research and evaluation experience with the ability to make independent decisions based on judgement and knowledge.

The aptitude to display tact and diplomacy where necessary when questioning others to gain information.

Excellent interpersonal skills, well developed oral communicative skills with the ability to produce clear, concise and accurate written records.

The ability to assimilate and apply new procedures and working practices brought about by organisational and procedural changes

Experience of organising and co-ordinating their own work calmly, methodically and effectively with the ability to arrange appointments with others in co-ordination with host venues.

Proven and well evidenced experience of working with office administrative procedures and systems. This includes the use of computers for administrative purposes and demonstrate the capacity to undertake training for new or bespoke systems.

Experience of building and maintaining good working relationships with colleagues in external organisations and encourage partnership working.

To perform all duties to the required standard at all times, including during times when the workload is significant due to seasonal variations in the number of registrations.

The ability to work well as part of a team as well as being able to work independently with minimal Supervision and on own initiative.

A flexible approach towards achieving team objectives and be willing to undertake a wide range of duties.
