The Role & Key Responsibilities

From your first day with us you will be part of a policing family making a real difference.

It is our mission to identify and protect vulnerable people, prevent and respond to harm and keep people safe.

This role will be working in the Old Police Cells Museum, within Brighton Town Hall.  However you will be managed, like any other police staff employee, and by the Partnership Manager in Brighton Police Station for Brighton and Hove Division, Sussex Police.

 

In this role you will be responsible to manage the Old Police Cells Museum, Brighton, through agreed policies on acquisition, disposal, cataloguing, conservation, security, promotion, education and display. You will also evaluate and propose amendments to the Trustees and Management Committee on maters such as policies and service reviews to assist in the management of the Museum.

You will manage relations with other museums, heritage organisations and other relevant agencies.

You will help develop and promote education and interest in heritage, involve the community in heritage activities inside and outside museums and implement programmes for participation.

This role will see you manage the Museum's collection according to recognised professional standards such as Spectrum.

You will be asked to support the Museum's application for accreditation and maintain this status once achieved.

You will be required to advise the Trustees, Honorary Secretary and Management Committee on all matters relating to the Museum Service, including new acquisitions and loans.

You will need to attend the meetings of the Management Committee and other committees or sub-committees as required and keep members aware of new initiatives, trends and opportunities for the museum service.

You will be expected to advise and assist the Honorary Treasurer in preparing the Museum budget, manage all income and expenditure and ensure that the Museum operates within its annually appointed budget, with the appropriate audit trail.

You will be asked to recruit, induct and train new volunteers and interns to the museum, including working with community groups and offering support throughout.

The role will see you needing to identify sources of funding and lead on applications to funding bodies that may further the development of the museum.

It will also be expected that yo undertake any other duties that may be required from time to time, appropriate to the grade and designation of the post.

Skills & Experience

Qualifications

A degree in a relevant subject or an appropriate professional qualification or a substantial and comparable level of knowledge and experience.

 

Knowledge, skills and experience

Knowledge of current professional standards, policies and sector initiatives for museums and universities including accreditation, Spectrum, Inspiring Learning for All, the Museums Association's vision Museums Change Lives and Arts Council England's ten-year strategic framework and mission Great Art and Culture for Everyone.

Appreciation of the potential of new technologies in developing access to museum collections and understanding.

Understanding of evaluation and assessment.

Substantial practical experience of museum work with relevant material.

Hands on experience of collections management and a sound understanding of collection management procedures, documentation and cataloguing systems.

Significant experience of public engagement work relating to museum collections (outreach, education, interpretation, exhibitions / displays etc).

Evidence of a personal commitment to developing access to museum collections.

Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a wide range of people of all age and backgrounds.

Good computer literacy.

Evidence of management and organisational skills including working with volunteers.

Evidence of finance management and budgetary experience.

Ability to work under pressure, independently and be self-motivated.

Ability to prioritise and manage own workload to meet agreed targets and deadlines.

 

Additional requirements 

Commitment to acquiring awareness of current Health and Safety legislation.

Willingness to work some weekends and evenings as required by the role.

Commitment to continuing professional development and a willingness to learn.

Be of good general health and have an ability to lift and handle items from the collection.

Have a good understanding of equalities and its relevance to the museum sector.
