This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst continuing to be two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.


Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.


Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowance and hours.

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role

To assist the deployment of logistical equipment to support the force and operations command in managing large scale operations, major incidents and civil emergencies.

To oversee and maintain all logistical equipment and testing to ensure kit remains deployable and fit for purpose.

Key Responsibilities

Provide a dedicated Logistics role on behalf of Operations Command.

Provide advice and guidance to operational police supervisors on the assessment and provision of logistical equipment in support of Force operations and significant incidents and ensure a prompt response to operational incidents with the delivery of such logistical equipment.

Responsible for ensuring that departmental vehicles are serviced and VOSA tested (where necessary) at the appropriate times, are well maintained.

Responsible for ensuring that all Operations Command Logistics equipment within both force areas is audited, well maintained, serviced and kept in full working order ensuring it remains serviceable and available for deployment, and that equipment is replaced or updated where necessary.

Conduct research into specialist equipment required by Operations Command, involving liaison with external manufacturers and suppliers, testing of such equipment, composing written reports in support of large-scale purchases and improvements for logistics equipment.

To be part of the 24 hour response capability of the Operation Planning Team. Provide a dedicated logistics role in large policing operations as part of the logistics team.

Responsible for preparing logistical equipment and resources as required for regular team training days to ensure that all staff and officers are well versed in the deployment and usage of all equipment.

To undertake all such other duties to the grade and character of work as may be required, including the specific duties of similar work or lesser graded posts.

Skills & Experience

Essential
Educated to GCSE level or equivalent. IT literate in Microsoft programs, particularly word, excel and mapping systems.
Experience of producing concise, comprehensive reports and logistics plans often set to tight deadlines, including liaising with internal and external partners.
Ability to work unsupervised as the dedicated logistics planner and coordinate work within the team. Experience of working in a pressurised environment.
Experience of undertaking minor maintenance of vehicles (changing tyres, replacing light bulbs, general safety checks).
Able to work hours flexibly in accordance with the operational needs including weekends and unsociable hours.
Good negotiation skills Good communication skills Planning and organising skills Evidence of Good decision-making skills Ability to work and contribute within a small team effectively.


The post holder must have a driving licence and be able to travel. Able to lift and carry heavy operational equipment safely. Willingness and requirement to pass an enhanced level of vetting.


Desirable
Wider knowledge and understanding of policing operations including internal departments and external agencies.
Knowledge and understanding of a police response to a major incident.
Knowledge of the law and human rights. Experience of delivering training on a small scale and/or instructing people in the safe use of items of equipment.
Aptitude to learn the relevant testing measures regarding CBRN equipment maintenance.
Manual handling awareness.
Police driving permit holding categories 4x4, trailer towing, vans, winching (these can be obtained once in post)
