This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst remaining two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.
Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.
Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowances and hours.

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role & Key Responsibilities
We have an exciting opportunity available to become part of the Security and Information Assurance Team for Surrey and Sussex Police; you will be responsible for managing our Security Operations Centre and providing expert advice on the selection, design, justification, implementation and operation of Forces' ICT security controls and management strategies to maintain the confidentiality, integrity, availability, accountability and relevant compliance of the Forces' information systems.

The demands on policing are greater than ever before, against a backdrop of budget reductions and pressures that require us to examine our spending, whilst also safeguarding our policing operations, citizen data and infrastructure against evolving cyber threats.
What you’ll be doing:
If you are passionate about protecting critical infrastructure and ensuring the security of sensitive data and operational policing assets and have a proven track record of managing and motivating a Team, we have just the opportunity for you!
Join us as our IT Security Officer; you'll be an integral player in developing our defensive cyber security controls, including Protective Monitoring, Cyber Threat Intelligence, Vulnerability Management and providing advice and guidance in relation to the selection, justification and operation of security controls and measures for new solution designs in order to ensure a secure by design approach
To be successful you will be proactive, have a deep understanding of cyber practices, as well as the drive to develop our Security Operations Centre services. You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work effectively with both technical and non-technical staff.
You will be responsible for the creation and testing of incident response plans, co-ordination and technical investigation of any security breaches and other cyber security incidents by providing root cause analysis support for incidents, and determining if critical systems or data sets have been impacted. You will also advise on and coordinate the implementation of any remediation actions and provide an incident report outlining the effectiveness of the Force response and any lessons learnt.
You will need to engage with key stakeholders across the Forces and work closely with the other members of the Security and Information Assurance Team and IT colleagues. As the lead of our Security Operations Centre, you will be expected to make decisions on Alerts, Threats and Vulnerabilities and ensure the welfare, coaching and career development for your Team.
Skills & Experience
What skills you’ll need
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Security or related field required; or to have attained demonstrable experience in an Information Security role.
- CompTIA Sec+
- In-depth knowledge of cyber-security principles, tools, and technologies.
- Expertise in developing comprehensive information security policies, standards, processes, and guidelines to ensure robust security across the entire digital landscape.
- Evidenced history in planning and driving penetration testing within specific business areas, delivering objective insights into vulnerabilities, defence effectiveness, and mitigating controls.
- Strong leadership experience, including managing and motivating teams, and effectively planning and prioritising resources to deliver high-quality services.
- Demonstrated ability to engage with Senior Management and external regulators, providing authoritative guidance to ensure compliance with security procedures
- Experience in reviewing actual or potential security breaches and vulnerabilities and ensuring they are promptly and thoroughly investigated. Recommending actions and appropriate control improvements.
