The Role

An opportunity has arisen to join the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership (SSRP) as an Investigations and Enquiries Officer, working at Shoreham Police Station.

As a key member of the team, you will routinely communicate with a significant number of internal and external partners and stakeholders. Liaising closely with the Casualty Reduction Team, Safety Camera Team, Camera & Ticket Process Team, Case Workers, Case Directors, Force colleagues, and course providers regarding offenders and offences.

Key Responsibilities

Record criminal offences in line with national rules and guidance and maintain secure, accurate records of files that require further enquiries.

Prepare and undertake formal interviews of suspects under caution, in compliance with provisions of the Police and Criminal Evidence 1984. Prepare and deliver relevant disclosure material during the process as necessary and required. This includes processing persons suspected of Perverting the Course of Justice or other offences resulting from Notices generated by the department through Safety Camera enforcement, ensuring witnesses and victims are updated with the progress of the investigation.

Investigation of criminal & road traffic related offences resulting from Notices issued by the Safety Camera Officers and Police Officers. Undertake visits to private, residential and commercial premises in pursuance of general, evidential enquiries. Obtain written witness statements as required and effect the service of summon/papers in person if required.

Research and obtain evidence relating to investigations; prepare evidential files for court; liaise with Crown Prosecution Service including the gathering and assessment of unused material to comply with the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996.

Complete telephone enquiries related to notices generated and deal with incoming telephone enquiries from members of the public and potential suspects, related to the role. Undertake enquiry/investigation for all relevant cases for the department as required. Review cases and seek guidance from Case Directors to make decisions to proceed or cancel notices based on information held on Police and partner databases.

Promote and form working relationships with partners, other agencies, local and national Police Forces and Authorities to assist in enquiries for the department, dealing with any such enquiries in a timely manner whilst taking into account legal obligations.

Perform the role of Case Officer in court hearings and trials for appropriate PIP1 and PIP2 cases arising from traffic offences.

Complete regular mandatory training and relevant PIP training including PEACE model and disclosure.

Actively identify intelligence gathering opportunities. Make accurate and timely submissions via the 5x5x5 intelligence system.

Undertake such duties as appropriate to the grade and character of the work as maybe reasonably required including specific duties of a similar or lesser graded post.

Skills & Experience

A good knowledge of policies and procedures relating to criminal investigation and particularly the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996.

Proven and well-evidenced experience in investigations which may include conducting interviews and case building. The successful candidate will already be PIP1 accredited or willing to work towards PIP1 accreditation.

Excellent interpersonal skills with the confidence and ability to negotiate and influence others through verbal and written communication.

Must be capable of absolute discretion in handling matters of a personal, sensitive and confidential nature.

Ability to interpret information quickly and effectively in order to select the right course of action.

Demonstrates confidence, credibility and resilience; and excellent organisational, planning and prioritising abilities.

IT literate with the ability to pick up systems quickly. The role involves the use of a number of systems including STORM, Niche and Microsoft Office (training in police IT systems will be provided).

Ability to independently analyse problems, exercise own judgement in a consistent manner, and make sound decisions within confines of legislation and agreed procedures The ability to work under pressure, have a methodical approach to work, as well as the ability to meet competing deadlines. Maintain accurate records throughout an investigation to support disclosure requirements.
