The Role

Applications are invited for the post of Investigating Officer on the Sexual Offence Investigation Team (SOIT) based at Surrey Police Headquarters. This role presents an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of rape and serious sexual offence investigation across the County. SOIT is a specialist investigation department aligned to the Central Public Protection Command and is responsible for the management and investigation of serious sexual offences


Working within a busy Sexual Offences Investigations Team, you will be deployed alongside detectives and investigating officers to support investigations into the most serious sexual offences. You will aim to achieve clear investigative objectives including the establishment and identification of criminal offences, pursuit of all reasonable lines of enquiry, identifying, interviewing and charging offenders and presentation of case files to the Crown Prosecution Service in support of a prosecution.

All this will be achieved whilst delivering an exceptional level of victim care and safeguarding support to identify, minimise and mitigate risk.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform the role of Investigating Officer for rape and serious sexual offence investigations.

• To conduct operational risk assessments and build safeguarding strategies to reduce or mitigate identified risks.

• To interview witnesses of rape and serious sexual assault & obtain best evidence via statement or video.

• To interview suspects of rape and serious sexual assault & obtain best evidence. • Work alongside support services and partner agencies in support of multi-agency safeguarding assessments and delivery of safeguarding measures.

• To work with medical, forensic and digital specialists in order to create and maximise evidential opportunities where appropriate.

• To deliver exceptional victim care ensuring victims are dealt with ethically and with empathy.

• To support the building of strong evidential case files presenting all available evidence and information in a clear, concise and methodical manner.

• To ensure the practical application of disclosure in accordance with the CPIA and the Attorney General’s Guidelines.

• To be involved in and/or attend case conferences between the OIC and CPS. This will ensure that best practises and procedures or deficiencies are identified and progressed.

Skills & Experience

In order to be successful it is essential that you are able to demonstrate the following:

• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to deliver sensitive messages clearly and tactfully whilst building trust and rapport through the use of empathy.

• Confidence and an ability to work without direct supervision whilst under pressure; prioritising work and dealing with competing or conflicting demands and interests in an organised and methodical manner.

• Strong problem solving skills with the ability to analyse information in order to make quick operational decisions.

• The ability and willingness to obtain Professionalising Investigation Programme (PIP) - Level One accreditation.

• The ability and willingness to undertake witness and suspect interviewing accreditation to PIP Level two.

• The ability and willingness to undertake the new Sexual Offences Investigation Trained Development Programme.

• A UK manual driving licence.

• The post holder is expected to be aware of current legislation and procedures in respect of rape and other serious sexual offences investigations and should continue to keep themselves and relevant staff updated with any policy or legislation changes.

We are unable to accept applications from existing Investigating officers currently employed by Surrey Police. The post holder must be willing to undertake shift work between 0700 and 2200hrs and be flexible around working hours and their workplace location.

We operate agile working. The post holder will be required on occasion to work mandatory, unplanned overtime.

The role will involve deployments across the county of Surrey. Part-time and flexible working applications will be considered.

Please note that applicants must be available to attend an Induction before commencing on an uninterrupted PIP1 Investigation 8 week course on 9th May 2022. (Applicants that already have PIP 1 Status will not be required to attend this course).
