The Role

Operations Command are advertising for vacancies for uniform Constables within the Neighbourhood Response Teams at Gatwick Airport. The vacancies are for unarmed uniform Constable’s to assist in the policing operation at Gatwick. As well as looking to fill current vacancies we are also looking to identify suitable candidates for anticipated vacancies over the next 12 months. Applications invited from Sussex Constables or those wishing to transfer to Sussex.


Working alongside armed officers and explosive detection dogs on a 24 hour shift pattern you will be assisting in the overall policing operation at Gatwick Airport. During these changing times and the impact that Covid-19 has had to the airport the need for vigilance and Policing presence is imperative.
The changing landscape and the re-establishment of business as usual within the Airport makes this post an excellent opportunity for someone who is proactive and adaptable to the changing environment.

This is a varied role which includes responding to incidents and pro-active patrols to deter criminality at the airport and support the counter terrorism activities as well as being prepared to deal with emergency incidents at the airport. This is a highly visible role in a unique working environment at the second busiest airport in the country. The airport previously handled in excess of 40 million passengers a year and aims to get back to those levels as soon as practicable, in addition it also employs a great number of people. Due to large scale redundancies by the airport and partners the risk of insider threat has never been higher and the ability to spot and challenge unusual behaviour is key to the role.
As the airport business recovers so will the number of employees and the continued vigilance and interaction. Working alongside partners and other enforcement agencies is an integral part of the role as well as utilising legislation and skills specific for the airport.
You will also undertake the Major Incident course at Gatwick which provides you with the tools and knowledge to help deal with a major incident.

Key Responsibilities

The purpose of the role is to support the policing operation at the airport by connecting counter terrorism policing, neighbourhood and response policing and to assist in dealing with a major incident. All activity undertaken is based on threat, risk and vulnerability across the airport footprint and there is a requirement for you to be able to operate with minimum supervision in a proactive manner

Skills & Experience

The successful applicant will have good understanding of operational policing. You will be able to evidence successful achievements from self-identified activities and have a proven background in problem solving and working with minimal supervision. Partnership working experience would be an advantage as would experience of community policing.
Effective communication skills are essential and officers who can speak second languages are also encouraged to apply. You will also be expected to have an understanding of the JESIP principles and METHANE.
