The Role

The Forensic Digital Media Unit has been established to meet the demand of modern policing. Would you like to work in a fast-paced forensic multimedia environment? Are you confident, self-motivated, and methodical? Can you work to tight deadlines with minimal supervision? As a Forensic Digital Media Examiner you will provide a high-quality service to stakeholders, investigators and the Major Crime Team, providing forensically sound products. You will engage with investigating officers and advise on the most appropriate formats for production and presentation. This role encompasses and wide variety of work dealing with multimedia evidential material for presentation in court and to support on-going investigations. An eye for detail and experience in editing and enhancement of video/audio/photographic file formats is essential in this role. The role will involve handling images and footage which will be of a sensitive and / or disturbing nature. Job progression from E to F grade once the Examiner is deemed competent in the role. Competency progression will range from examiner to examiner, but the expectation is that this may be gained between 12-18 months.

Key Responsibilities

You will examine, analyse, convert, edit and enhance a wide range of multimedia formats using editing and enhancement tools in support of investigative and criminal justice requirements. You are responsible for handling exhibits, ensuring that all actions taken are recorded and retained for audit, allowing others to not only review your actions but to reproduce your output. This is to fulfil criminal justice requirements according to policy, procedures, relevant to Quality Standards and legislation. Through customer engagement you will use technical knowledge and specialist software applications to provide solutions to customer requirements and you will act as a point of reference in respect of digital media.

Skills & Experience

To be successful as a Forensic Digital Media Examiner you will be self-motivated with proven experience of working methodically, often to tight deadlines with minimal supervision. Candidates must be able to demonstrate substantial experience working in a Audio/Video environment and have attained recognized and relevant academic qualifications. You must be able to demonstrate proven competency in the application of multimedia processing software (e.g. Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Audition, Avid, FFMPEG and Microsoft Office base products such as Word and Excel). It is desirable that the candidate has proven competencies in video and audio analysis and conversion (FFMPEG), CCTV export and enhancement (Impress or Amped FIVE Professional).

Job progression from E to F grade once the Examiner is deemed competent in the role.

This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst continuing to be two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.

Successful candidates will be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of Surrey Police and successful applicants from Sussex Police will be transferred to a Surrey contract.

This vacancy will be based at Headquarters, Guildford. Please note that in 2024 Surrey Police Headquarters is due to move to Leatherhead.
