This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst continuing to be two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.


Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.


Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowance and hours.

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role

The Forensic Digital Media Unit has been established to meet the demand of modern policing.
Are you confident, self-motivated and methodical? Can you work to tight deadlines with minimal supervision? Would you like to work in a fast-paced forensic multi-media environment?
As a Forensic Digital Media Examiner you will provide a high quality service to stakeholders, investigators and the Major Crime Team in relation to serious incidents, giving advice and options for the most appropriate presentation and production of vital multimedia evidence.
This role encompasses and wide variety of work dealing with multimedia components including the processing of video, audio and photographic evidence for presentation in court and to support on-going investigations.
An eye for detail and understanding of colour management is important in this role to ensure that all outputs provide an accurate representation of that which it purports to be. The job will also involve coming into contact with images which will be of a sensitive or disturbing nature.
Job progression from E to F grade once the Examiner is deemed competent in the role.

Key Responsibilities

You will examine, analyse, convert, edit and enhance a wide range of multimedia formats using editing and enhancement tools in support of investigative and criminal justice requirements.
You are responsible for handling exhibits, ensuring that all actions taken are recorded and retained for audit, allowing others to not only review your actions but to reproduce your output.
This is to fulfil criminal justice requirements according to policy, procedures, relevant to Quality Standards and legislation.
Through customer engagement you will use technical knowledge and specialist software applications to provide solutions to customer requirements and you will act as a point of reference in respect of digital media evidence.

Skills & Experience

To be successful as a Forensic Digital Media Examiner you will be self-motivated with proven experience of working methodically, often to tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate substantial experience working in a Audio/Video or Imaging environment and have attained recognised and relevant academic qualifications.
You must be able to demonstrate proven competency in the application of imaging and media processing software (e.g. Adobe Premiere, Avid, Photoshop, Lightroom, FFMPEG and Microsoft Office base products such as Word and Excel).
It is desirable that the candidate has proven competencies in video and audio conversion (FFMPEG), CCTV downloads and enhancement (Impress of Amped Five Pro).
