This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst continuing to be two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.
Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.
Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowance and hours.

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.
The Role
The FCI role involves examining scenes, collecting evidence and data, conducting research, reconstructing incidents, preparing in-depth reports and the presentation of expert evidence at criminal and civil courts.
Key Responsibilities
To attend incidents as required, and conduct both the evidence gathering phase and subsequent reconstruction phase in accordance with legislation, ISO Quality Standards, Civil & Criminal Procedure Rules and any other agreed local or national protocols.
To conduct static and dynamic risk assessments before and during any work undertaken to ensure compliance with Health and Safety legislation.
To conduct vehicle examinations as required and to record findings and liaise with specialist experts / manufacturers as necessary.
To record evidence at scene and subsequent vehicle examinations with competent use of digital photography, laser, surveying and other equipment.
To maintain appropriate records and audit trails (both manual and electronic) in respect of evidence gathering, forensic reconstructions and exhibits.
To conduct an appropriate level of investigation and produce suitable evidential packages and reports.
As an expert witness, give evidence at Magistrates, Crown, Coroners and Civil proceedings.
To be proficient in the use of computer and I.T systems, especially Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Computer Aided Design packages such as RiScan Pro / RiSOLVE and Animation software.
To maintain competence in the FCI role, following training and qualification pathways as required.
Skills & Experience
Essential:
UCPD Forensic Road Collision Investigation, or equivalent City and Guilds Advanced Police Forensic Collision Investigation examination pass (including statistics).
To have proven mathematical ability and good literacy skills, by assessment, if required.
To be computer literate and have sound practical knowledge of Microsoft office programs.
To hold a full car driving licence and be willing to be trained to police advance driving standard.
To possess or be willing to undertake motorcycle training.
To possess or be willing to be trained in additional driving groups.
Be able to show competence with day and night photography.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Must be able to manage own workload and prioritise competing demands.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with members of the public, senior managers, partner agencies and colleagues whether at scene or in other environments.
Excellent problem solving ability.
A track record showing personal responsibility.
Flexibility, as some shifts may be subject to change at short notice and hours of work may be extended due to operational commitments / exigencies of duty.
Must be aware of Health and Safety and be able to carry out both static and dynamic risk assessments
Desirable:
To have proven experience in the area of Collision Investigation, including scene examination, reconstruction reporting and giving evidence before Crown, Magistrates, Coroners and Civil courts.
Have obtained, or working towards:
Cert HE Forensic Road Collision Investigation
FdSc Forensic Road Collision Investigation
BSc Forensic Road Collision Investigation
Qualifications in / working knowledge of:
Surveying techniques in one or more of the following: use of Total Stations, GPS, Laser Scanners, Chain and offset measurement and recording and Triangulation methods Vehicle handling dynamics Vehicle electronic systems
Tachographs
Air braking systems
Anti-lock braking systems
Pedestrian collision dynamics
Motorcycle collision dynamics
Forensic light bulb examination
Forensic tyre examination
City and Guilds light vehicle examination (or equivalent)
Other:
Proven experience of presenting evidence.
AAE/CAE/Eng Tech or similar vehicle mechanic qualification.
Trainer / teaching qualification
To be a member of, or be able to successfully apply for membership of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences
Current full membership of Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators (MITAI) or working towards membership
Licentiateship of City and Guild of the London Institute DSA licence for Large Goods vehicles
