The Role & Key Responsibilities
As one of the Force Control Room (FCR) Supervisors you will be responsible for leading, motivating and developing a team of dispatch controllers within the FCR. You will have operational supervisory responsibility as well as line management duties.
You will assist the Force Incident Manager (FIM) in managing your rota by taking responsibility for performance, sickness, behaviour, welfare and morale as well as identifying the training needs of the team. You will ensure that relevant records are updated with actions and outcomes and manage any required meetings in relation to performance and attendance.
You will manage operational risk using the NDM for spontaneous, planned and deferred incidents. You will co-ordinate and direct staff in the FCR to deploy appropriate resources in a timely manner and in accordance with current policy and procedure. You will ensure that any risk to the public, police officers, police staff and Force reputation is identified and appropriate action is undertaken to mitigate that risk.
You will need a positive attitude, to set a good example and ensure a high standard of professional conduct on your team. You will need to deal with inappropriate or poor behaviour quickly and efficiently, promoting professional standards and conduct at all times.
To manage staff on the rota by undertaking focus meetings, writing any necessary support plans, DoCRAs, adjustment passports and occupational health referrals.
To take responsibility for the performance of the dispatch controllers from the point of incident acceptance and review through to its conclusion. This could mean the deployment of officers or the conclusion of an incident by other means. To ensure that incidents are handled professionally and in within sensible timescales.
To act as gatekeeper with regards to the deployment of finite police resources.
To provide support to the FIM during spontaneous firearms incidents and to undertake training to become a pursuit manager, demonstrating thereafter an ability to manage spontaneous pursuit incidents.
To debrief incidents of note, to capture learning points and improve performance.
To build and improve effective partnerships between the FCR and other departments and identify routes to building a supportive and inclusive work environment.
To actively promote and comply with Surrey Police’s obligations under the Equality Act 2010 and also all relevant health and safety legislation.

Skills & Experience
Experience working within a control room or other high-pressured, fast-paced environment dealing with multiple demands is preferred, as is a proven track record of managing threat, harm and risk to police officers, police staff and members of the public alike.
Proven and well-evidenced experience in a leadership role, or the ability to demonstrate the potential for providing effective leadership.
The ability to analyse information, extract relevant data and use problem solving skills and initiative to make reasoned and responsible decisions that consider all the relevant factors and information, based on Force policy and best practice.
The ability to work and perform effectively under pressure whilst remaining calm and working to tight deadlines in a highly demanding environment.
The ability to acquire an in-depth knowledge and understanding of relevant law, national guidance and force policies.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills with the ability to communicate appropriately with all levels of the command structure and across all mediums, including (but not limited to) paper records, computer systems, radio and telephone systems.
Proficiency in Windows based applications. The ability to learn and maintain an advanced knowledge and understanding of the IT and communications systems deployed within the FCR.
*Please note that this is a shift working position as the FCR is open 24 hours per day. The pattern is two early shifts, two late shifts, two night shifts and then four rest days.
