This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst continuing to be two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.
Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.
Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowance and hours.

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.
The Role
To undertake all administrative functions linked to the grant/renewal of certificates issued by the Unit. To review assess and Quality Assure applications, supporting paperwork and correspondence and make an objective, threat/risk based decision utilising the National Decision Model and thereby to support the overarching responsibility of the unit to protect the public as far as is practicable from foreseeable and avoidable harm. To act as first line decision maker in the grant/renewal process.
Key Responsibilities
To develop knowledge and understanding of the legislations and Guidance pertaining to the licensing of firearms and explosives and be able thereby to act as an advisor to colleagues and members of the public.
To review applications for grant and renewal of certificates and licences issued by this unit ensuring that all relevant legislation policy and guidance is complied with.
To interrogate the National and Local intelligence systems in connection with the vetting of applicants, holders, referees and cohabitees. To record and analyse results to determine suitability of the applicant/holders.
To make grant decisions in cases where risk has been assessed at low and effectively assess which decisions should be referred upward.
To deal with members of the public, certificate holders, colleagues of all ranks and outside agencies effectively by being able to demonstrate knowledge of this specialist subject and deal with queries and concerns with confidence and clarity.
To input and maintain accurate records using the National Firearms Licensing Management System and take necessary action relating to correspondence.
Be able to prioritise and organise an ongoing, heavy workload effectively, without compromise to our responsibility to safeguard public safety, whilst delivering an efficient, timely service to all.
Skills & Experience
Educated to GCSE Level (passes inc English and Maths) or have proven relevant work experience which brings the post holder to a comparable level.
Ability to quickly assimilate training in the use of the National Firearms Licensing Management System.
Ability to understand and interpret complex legislation.
A sound working knowledge of Word and Excel based IT systems and ability to pass training to effectively interrogate all available national and local police intelligence systems.
High standard of written and verbal communication skills.
Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, able to deal with colleagues, stakeholders and customers.
Understanding of shooting activity. Awareness of why shooting takes place both as a business and as a sport, what is shot and why. Social and community impact of shooting.
