Vacancy Information

As a Fingerprints Volunteer you will be offering a fingerprinting service to members of the public. On occasion members of the public are required to get a police certified set of fingerprints or various reasons such as to get good conduct certificates or oversea police clearances for jobs within the UK if they have lived/worked abroad. This a service the members of public pay for, price fixed by the Home Office, and therefore there is some potential for handling money as part of this role.

The Role

You will be responsible for meeting and greeting the members of public at Reception, confirming their identity and their individual requirements (e.g. number of sets of prints, correct forms to use etc). Then you will then take their fingerprints using ink (wet set) including rolled impressions and on occasion palms; following training that will be provided. Once completed, you will give them the set(s) of prints to take away with and either take the fee from them in cash, or ensure they have paid upfront online. There is likely to be some administrative work to document attendance and payments for each appointment.

The appointments can be ad hoc and flexible to meet the volunteer’s requirements. The Forensic Identification Services Unit (FISU) can book the appointments for the times they know the volunteer to be working, but this would usually be Monday to Friday between 0830 and 1500. Staff in FISU will also be on hand to assist with any appointment if required as well as providing full training.

The role will be based at the Headquarters site in Lewes

Key Responsibilities

The main responsibilities will be:

• Work with FISU to arrange fingerprint appointments for convenient times and ensure Reception are informed.
• Conduct the fingerprint appointment with the member of public – confirming identity, requirements and taking the physical set(s) of prints.
• Ensure the appointment is paid for either in cash on the today or online prior to the appointment.
• If cash payments are still being made, to work with FISU to bank the money with the Finance Department .

Skills & Experience

We are looking for volunteers who can confidently engage with members of the public, demonstrating good communication and interpersonal skills.

In addition, you will need to be willing to have physical contact with the members of the public in order to take a good quality set of fingerprints (PPE will be provided).

Having a good eye for detail in order to critically review the fingerprints taken but also to accurately complete the associated paperwork.

If you have an interest in forensics plus customer service and want to learn a new skill, then this opportunity may appeal to you. No previous experience in forensics or taking fingerprints is required, full training will be provided.
