The Role

As a Crime Investigator, each day will be different and you will never know what you could be dealing with when you start work. Your shift could include:

•Interviewing a suspect
•Gathering or reviewing evidence
•Taking witness statements
•Collecting items for forensic examination
•Creating files for court.
•Liaising with the Crown Prosecution Service and other partner agencies.

You will gain trust from victims and witnesses and will be responsible for keeping them updated throughout the investigation. Using your initiative to investigate crimes, you will be responsible for working out a plan of action and making decisions about how to deal with cases. You must be able to work under pressure, solve problems and prioritise your workload. Crime Investigators are based across the county in a variety of locations. You will need to be able to work shifts, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.

Training and Career Development

By successfully completing the recruitment process, you will join us as a Crime Investigator and attend a 6-week Investigating Officer course at Headquarters, Lewes. The training course is full-time, Monday to Friday, working 8:30 to 16:00. You will be required to attend this course on a full time basis but part time working is available following the 6 week training period.

Upon completing your training, you will join one of our teams receiving on the job training and building your portfolio of evidence required to obtain your PIP 1 accreditation. The Professional Investigation Programme (PIP) is a national certification that provides a developmental pathway which includes consistent training, work-place assessment and accreditation to a national standard. You will be paid a full salary of £22,047 plus unsocial hours shift allowance in the region of £6,000 per year.

If you are looking to progress in your career with us, we will support you in taking the National Investigators Exam (NIE). Once you have passed this, you will be able to apply for PIP 2 Crime Investigator roles where you will take on more complex and serious cases. As a PIP 2 Crime Investigator we provide ongoing, continuous training to support your development and help you attain your PIP 2 accreditation.

Following this there is the opportunity to progress to a PIP 2 Supervisor and oversee a team of Crime Investigators and Police Officers.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the role of Crime Investigator, you will need to:

• Be aged 18 years or over (on the day you submit your application)
• Have achieved a standard of education equivalent to GCSE level C (or 4-9) in English and Mathematics (evidence of this will be required)
• Have lived in the UK for three continuous years, immediately prior to application.
• Have leave to enter or leave to remain and work in the UK for an indefinite period.
• Have a full manual driving licence by the time of appointment.
• Not be a member of the British National Party (BNP) or similar organisations, such as Combat 18 or The National Front.
• No more than six penalty points on your driving licence and / or two or more motoring offences within three years prior to the application date.
