The Role

Preventing the exploitation of children, young people and adults in Sussex is a key priority for our Exploitation Reduction Unit. This is a role that will be working alongside partner services to transform the multi-agency approach in reducing exploitation by focusing on child sexual exploitation, gangs and violent crime, county lines, modern slavery and human trafficking.

Key Responsibilities

If you have strong leadership skills, a track record of establishing and maintaining strong relationships and a good understanding of exploitation criminality coupled with the drive to make a difference, then this could be the role for you. You will have the responsibility of representing Sussex Police as a strategic partner at external and internal meetings and will lead our engagement in relevant national work. You will have excellent communication skills that will inspire confidence, win the trust to form strong partnerships across partner agencies and local, regional and national organisations to achieve the aims of the Exploitation Strategy. This role will lead the small close knit team working to develop and implement the Exploitation Strategy and reports directly to the Exploitation Superintendent. Responsible for supporting the activities of agencies’, coordination and reporting on action and progress internally and externally is a key part of this role. You will be expected to seek and source funding streams to improve the force’s response to the exploitation of children and young people. Research, and produce funding applications to internal and external funders. There will also be the need to understand the expectations of the various national inspections and returns. Assess, process and gather the required data, ensuring its integrity. Review, analyse and present data to internal and external audiences. There will a requirement for you to Co-ordinate the delivery of training material internally, and to key partners and communities. Design and produce supporting literature that supports the exploitation plan, raise awareness and deliver a more effective approach to tackling the exploitation of children and young persons.

  • Practical experience of working in a partnership/collaborative environment.
    Demonstrable experience and good understanding of exploitation criminality, current best practices and the regulation and governance related to the relevant crime types.
  • Experience of managing in a complex political and organisational environment.
    Context specific knowledge around the government’s Child Exploitation, County Lines & Cuckooing, Modern Slavery & Human Trafficking, Organised Immigration Crime and Serious Violence strategies, and associated best practice nationally.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 and associated tools and powers to disrupt Serious Organised Crime.
  • Excellent knowledge of the NCA S.5 Crime & Courts Act 2013 tasking in relation to Organised Immigration Crime
  • Ability to inform, negotiate, and influence at all levels, including senior colleagues and senior partners.
  • Pro-active, self-disciplined approach to tasks with the ability to be flexible and work to tight timescales with minimum management and direction.
  • Ability to manage, motivate and also work as part of a team.
    Excellent oral and written communications demonstrating integrity, tact, tenacity and diplomacy.
  • Experience of building and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders, inspiring confidence, winning trust and acting with honesty and integrity.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage conflicting priorities.
  • Excellent time and task management skills; ability to deliver to committed deadlines, demonstrating attention to detail.
  • Ability to use tact, initiative and independent judgment within policy, procedural, and legal guidelines while remaining calm in difficult situations.
  • Experience of managing stakeholders effectively and working with multiple partners.
  • Demonstrate experience of leading, managing and motivating a team, including performance management, staff development and work planning.
  • Ability to influence, negotiate and make decisions at a senior level.
