Chief Constables' Message

We really welcome your interest in joining our Police Force. It is a privilege to lead the teams in Surrey Police and Sussex Police who continuously work selflessly and tirelessly in order to keep people in our counties safe.

We are looking for talented and inspirational people who put the needs of the public at the heart of everything that they do and who want to make a difference. If you feel you are that person then we want to hear from you.

We wish you all the very best with your application.

Chief Constable Tim De Meyer & Chief Constable Jo Shiner

The Role & Key Responsibilities

We anticipate most of the vacancies will be within the North Surrey division, located at Staines Police Station. However, we will be building a pool for all three divisions North (Staines), East (Reigate), West (Guildford). If you are also open to positions within East and West Surrey, please include this within your application.

You will be working as part of a specialist team of police officers and staff who are passionate about protecting some of the most vulnerable people in our communities from domestic related abuse. This is a very demanding but most rewarding role.

Please note this role involves working a mixture of day and evening shifts, including 1 weekend in 3. Please also note the serious and distressing nature of some of the crimes investigated on this team for example CCB (Controlling and Coercive Behaviour), HBA (Honour Based Abuse), Sexual assault and Rape. All successful applicants will be asked to complete a psychological health screening as part of the clearance process before a formal offer is made.

This is not an easy role and - although the work will be amongst the most rewarding in policing - it will also be emotionally demanding. Because of this it won’t be for everyone which is why we are specifically looking for resilient individuals who are able to persevere in the face of adversity.

Key responsibilities:
You will carry your own case load of PIP1 (professionalising investigation programme level 1) cases from reporting to trial and everything in-between. This will involve taking statements from complainants and witnesses, interviewing suspects, gathering other evidence such as CCTV and phone data, presenting the case file to the CPS (crown prosecution service) and then attending court as the officer in the case (OIC).

Your overall aims will be to safeguard individuals, bring perpetrators to justice and prevent further harm through high quality investigations, perseverance, and attention to detail.

You will be responsible for working alongside other teams within Surrey Police (forensics, custody, ID unit, other investigative departments) as well as our partners (Adult and Children’s social care, Domestic abuse outreach, MARAC, CPS) to ensure that your investigations are to the highest standard of evidential quality and compliant with all relevant legislation – such as PACE (Police and Criminal Evidence Act) and CPIA (Criminal Procedures and Investigations Act). This is a very demanding but most rewarding role.

Skills & Experience

Essential skills and experience:
• Proven experience in investigation matters and of conducting interviews to a high standard.
• A working knowledge of criminal law and of the criminal justice system.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate and empathise with different communities.
• The ability to operate a computer database system and/or the willingness to undertake training and become proficient in the use of Surrey Police systems.
• The ability to work effectively unsupervised and as part of a team.
• An understanding of the effect of other legislation such as GDPR, Equality Act as well as the impact of diversity and inclusion to an effective team
• A full and valid driving licence is required to fulfil your duties

Desirable skills and experience:
• Proven research skills, an attention to detail as well as the ability to innovate and think outside the box
• An understanding of the family, criminal and civil court systems and the orders and provisions of these and partners that can be used to protect victims of domestic abuse
