The Role & Key Responsibilities
The Role
Sussex Police Disclosure & Barring Unit are an essential partner to the Disclosure and Barring Service and are looking to recruit an experienced full-time supervisor with knowledge and skills of Safeguarding practices and managing a team that provides information to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). Information that is approved for disclosure enables employers to make safer decisions on recruitment for roles that provide services to Children and Vulnerable Adults in both Private and Public sectors.
The Sussex Disclosure and Barring team manage large volumes of applications, and as a supervisor of the team which works from our offices in Central Brighton, part of your responsibilities are:
Key Responsibilities
You will be Responsible for supervising and supporting the Disclosure and Barring Unit to maintain the expected level of completed applications received by Sussex Police and to monitor individual team member’s activities including Quality Assurance including:
• The management and allocation of all Disclosure and Barring Service applications received by the unit to ensure all applications and referrals are completed in line with the Service Level Agreement.
• Leading, motivating, coordinating, and supervising the activities of the Disclosure and Barring Unit team on a day-to-day basis, including monitoring, and managing performance through quality control for accuracy to ensure resilience is maintained within the unit, ensuring compliance with the requirements of the Data Protection Act 2018 in relation to Force Information.
• Assessing, prioritising, and allocating work, received by DBS and other agencies daily and identifying priorities. The supervisor has discretionary authority to authorise disclosures with clear and accurate written reports, therefor strong written and verbal communication skills are required.
• Act as a point of expert knowledge on Disclosure and Barring Service cases and recommendations for Disclosure on applications for persons wishing to work within the child and/or adult
• Managing areas of performance and attendance utilising the systems and processes available, identifying effective solutions to resolve issues through proactive monitoring of the team’s welfare to address any concerns at the earliest opportunity.
• To ensure compliance with the Disclosure and Barring Service Quality Assurance Framework (QAF) through in-role training and quality checking of coordinators completing disclosures and to maintain a robust Quality Assurance Framework (QAF) training programme.
Skills & Experience
Essential Skills and Experience
To be successful in this role you must demonstrate recent experience of managing a team at 1st line supervisory level and understanding of safeguarding requirements for Children and Vulnerable Adults. Experience of searching and utilising large amounts of information, preparing rationales for your decision making on the information identified including risk, and Human Rights Act article 8 in particular. Knowledge and experience of disclosure of information for a legal purpose and the ability to make decisions is essential. You would be educated to level A - C in GCSE English and Mathematics or have equivalent qualifications or experience.
You will have.
• Well-developed people skills, together with strong verbal and written communication. Written communications must be accurate, concise, and factual and to a high standard.
• A strong understanding of the application of legislation e.g., Data Protection Act and Human Rights Act,
• A proven and well evidenced recent experience in a supervisory/management capacity with the proven ability to make clear decisions with the information available.
• A proven ability in solving problems with solutions that meet stakeholder needs whilst remaining within legal and policy frameworks.
• Proven organisational & planning skills with the ability to work under The ability to be flexible and adaptable in your work with the ability to work independently in a busy environment.
Applicants will be required to obtain and maintain vetting status to HM Government Standards set out in the Manual of Protective Security for the required level of this post.
