The Role & Key Responsibilities
The Role
We are looking for an individual who is starting out or wanting to develop their career in the field of Computer Forensics. This exciting entry level position will introduce you to a range of policing activities in a constantly evolving field.
Technical Assistants provide a key service to the Digital Forensics Team, as well as Police Staff, Officers and 3rd parties. The role requires the application of specialist skills learnt from technical training and work experience to forensically image and complete initial assessments of digital storage devices.
You will need to assess, examine and report results from initial assessment of physical exhibits submitted to the Digital Forensics Team. You will be responsible for the initial data processing with the agreement of the case officer and examination strategy.
The successful applicant will be able to apply knowledge and methods, both practical and technical, to evaluate and respond to situations and administrative tasks that are required for service delivery.
The role is office based and the Digital Forensics Team is located at the Surrey Police HQ in Guildford. The role does not include weekend or shift working.
Key responsibilities include
The initial triage under the guidance of the analyst.
Setup, assist and manage the viewing of data with officers/staff.
Processing data from Police sources and outsourcing providers onto storage servers.
To be responsible for, manage and facilitate the correct handling of exhibits to maintain continuity and integrity and to ensure that all movements and examination of these items is evidentially sound and fully recorded on appropriate systems for audit purposes.
To ensure that all actions are recorded, retained for audit and disclosed according to policy, procedures, relevant standards (including ISO 17025 accreditation) and legislation.
To be responsible for maintaining an asset register for all Central DFT equipment and notify supervisors of any changes to the asset register.
Undertake the day to day routine maintenance of equipment and arrange maintenance to take place.
Skills & Experience
You will need to be/have
▫ A good standard of education (to A-Level or equivalent) with proven numeracy and literacy skills or equivalent by recent relevant experience.
▫ Ability to learn specific forensic software applications.
▫ Ability to be able to identify appropriate imaging methods based on exhibit type e.g to be able to demonstrate the different methods of acquisition, such as acquisition of a removed drive and acquisition of a drive in situ – including different types of devices such as standard PCs, MACs and Chromebooks etc.
▫ Able to demonstrate an aptitude and willingness for continuous learning and professional development.
▫ Self- motivated and proven experience of working methodically and patiently, often to deadlines, with none or minimal supervision.
▫ An understanding of the implications of ISO 17025
▫ Strong attention to detail.
▫ Able to evidence excellent written and verbal communication skills (including report writing).
▫ To be IT literate with experience of using a wide variety of computer software applications.
▫ Able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and time management, together with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels (and at Court) and to be a team player within a close working environment. Ability to highlight issues / concerns to DFT managers about outcomes in an appropriate manner.
▫ Proven ability of managing high workloads often with conflicting priorities. Good organisational skills.
▫ Able to demonstrate problem solving skills and decision making (including analysis and interpretation).
▫ Capable of absolute discretion when dealing with casework of a highly sensitive and confidential nature.
