The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Substantive Detective Sergeant within the Surrey Police Anti-Corruption Unit. You will be based at Surrey Police HQ and work mainly Monday to Friday, with a requirement to work unsociable hours and weekends when operationally necessary.

This is a permanent posting and applicants must be supported by their line managers.

Owing to the nature of the role applications cannot be accepted from individuals who are subject of current misconduct / gross misconduct investigation nor those who have a live misconduct finding. A review of complaints, conduct and intelligence will be made and applications may be refused without explanation.

The successful applicant will form part of the DS on call rota and will be subject to enhanced SC vetting prior to appointment.

The successful candidate will also be required to:
• Complete the College of Policing Counter Corruption Course.
• Attend the Professional Standards Investigation course.
• Obtain surveillance accreditations such as static observations, surveillance photography and log keeping.
• Attend other courses specific to the role.
• Spend time working with PSD Investigations to gain an understanding of police complaints and conduct legislation.

Key Responsibilities

The force-wide role includes maintaining the highest standards of professional behaviour, identifying and mitigating threats to the integrity of the organisation, and preventing and detecting misconduct or corrupt practice within Surrey Police.

The team investigates allegations of corruption, including; the developing and handling of sensitive intelligence; protecting Force assets; performing a liaison role with other divisions, departments and Police Forces; where justified by the degree of intelligence, the support and deployment of covert policing techniques to develop intelligence/evidence to a standard to enable criminal or misconduct prosecutions/procedures to be instigated.

The successful applicant will:
• Lead a team made up of experienced investigators, intelligence development officers, analyst, researcher and auditor and will take ownership of staff performance and development.
• Build strong relationships with internal departments and external partners.
• Uphold the highest standards of professional behaviour in our workforce, identifying and mitigating threats to the integrity of the organisation, and to prevent and detect misconduct or corrupt practice within Surrey Police or as directed
• Proportionally target those who represent the greatest threat to public confidence due to allegations of criminality, corruption and sexual misconduct ensuring they are dealt with in a proportionate, fair and timely manner.
• Cultivate and maintain a culture of transparency and willingness to challenge wrongdoing respecting confidentiality of ‘whistle-blowers’ when appropriate and requested.
• Protect vulnerable people by embedding the Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Behaviour to develop our organisational moral compass, providing clarity on direction, and supporting the development of appropriate professional boundaries

Skills & Experience

This is an operational role and candidates must hold a current OST certificate and have passed the Fitness Test.

Applicants must be substantive Detective Sergeants, with the highest levels of professional and personal integrity, and have recent experience of the following:
• Effective leadership and team management.
• Leading proactive or intelligence investigations.
• Leading serious and complex investigations.
• A sound working knowledge of RIPA / Disclosure and criminal investigations techniques • Sound knowledge of national and force policies and guidelines
• Ability to problem solve and identify risks.
• Has knowledge of the working practices of other departments and support agencies.
• Is able to produce clear, concise and logical reports, working to strict deadlines.
• Intelligence lead policing including the supervision and deployment of covert tactics to support investigations and intelligence development.
• Previous experience in Professional Standards is desirable but not essential.
