The Role

An opportunity has arisen for the post of Detective Inspector within the Professional Standards Department (PSD).

This role presents a unique opportunity to influence across the force and maintain public trust and confidence in policing. This vacancy is open to substantive Detective Inspectors.

You will act as a delegated Appropriate Authority, holding responsibility for the assessment allegations of misconduct (and related criminal matters) against police officers, special constables, staff, and contractors in line with relevant regulations and guidance. You will maintain a high level of oversight of subsequent investigations and act as the lead investigator for the most serious cases, and those presenting the greatest risk.

 

Key Responsibilities

As a member of the Professional Standards SMT you will work closely with the other PSD Detective Inspector and the Complaints Manager to ensure the highest standards of work and professionalism are maintained within the department, and across the force.

You will be expected to support meetings at a regional and occasionally national level, as well as Gold Groups locally.

You will provide advice and guidance, as appropriate, to members of Surrey Police and the public regarding the complaints and conduct regimes and procedures.

You will appropriately brief Chief Officers on investigations and explain rationale for decision making, as well as preparing reports to the DCC, CPS, Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC).

It is essential that you can manage a high workload often at pace, display the highest levels of integrity, have a good eye for detail and a flexible approach.

You will require excellent communication skills and organisational ability to develop and maintain close working relationships with partner agencies such as those above, staff associations and colleagues across Surrey Police & Sussex Police.

Applicants must hold or be prepared to undergo Management Vetting and Security Clearance – additional review of conduct history and intelligence will be undertaken prior to interview.

Skills & Experience

Strong investigative background Proven ability in successfully managing a team and organisational priorities

Proven ability in identifying and mitigating against risks

Experience of managing sensitive cases or those which have had the potential to cause reputational risk Sound judgement and decision-making skills

Proven ability of working to deadlines and managing competing demands

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal with the ability to negotiate, persuade and assert

Experience of delivering presentations to a varied level of recipients Proven ability to learn new processes quickly and to lead through change

An understanding of police misconduct processes is desirable, but full training will be given. The regulatory framework is complex and you will need to demonstrate the ability to quickly develop an understanding.
