Do you think proactively, have a passion for investigation, dedicated to tackling criminality force wide and be key to the success of the investigative function for an exciting new team within Sussex Police?
As part of Sussex Police’s officer uplift, an exciting opportunity has emerged for substantive Detective Constables within the Specialist Enforcement Unit, focussing on Force priorities, including organised acquisitive crime and KSI (killed or seriously injured) reduction strategies.
As part of the investigative team you will work closely with uniformed colleagues, especially the Liaison Officers, to contribute to, provide and build a wide picture of information on taskings and threats to our county. From this you will then lead investigations into organised criminality committed by those most intent on causing harm to our wider communities on the road network.
We want to put YOU at the fore front of investigations setting early strategy and briefing the unit to bring the best possible team results.
- The SEU Detective Constables are the primary investigators within the unit, supporting a proactive, tasked resource focused on Force priorities including key areas above.
- To lead a wide variety of investigations taking into account threat, harm and risk. Ensuring all cases are reviewed in a timely manner with an investigation action plan and all updates are clearly recorded.
- Consistent justified decision making in an intelligence driven environment to maximise investigative opportunities.
- Together with wider stakeholders, to fully investigate allocated priorities, to ensure that all victims and those identified at risk are offered maximum protection and, to prosecute offenders utilising the road network for criminality.
The Specialist Enforcement Unit will be dedicated to proactive policing at a Force level, working with other units to deny criminals the use of the roads and support the force control strategy, specifically; organised acquisitive crime and the reduction of killed or seriously injured collisions on our roads through visible presence and enforcement. Targeting high risk high harm offenders thereby protecting the people of Sussex and those most vulnerable.
The team will consist of:
- 1 Inspector
- 3 Uniform Sgt’s managing 9 Police Constables.
- 1 of the 9 PC’s will be a PC Liaison Officer
- Dedicated Investigations team - 1 Detective Sgt managing a team of detective and police Constables
- Dedicated dog handler support
Teams will work a shift pattern based around core shifts of earlies & lates with an expectation of flexibility due to the nature of the role. Details of the shift pattern are available on request. We are keen to promote diversity and flexibility in line with the role profile such as job sharing and part time (full shifts only).
Due to the nature of this team and the need for scene deployment, officers of Category A (fully operational – not on adjusted duties) and Category C (Verbal/physical confrontation would need to be risk assessed but able to work full shifts) are preferred for this unit.
Skills & Experience
- Proven decision making capability in an intelligence driven environment to maximise investigative opportunities.
- Experience of problem-solving and partnership working throughout investigations
- Knowledge of intelligence models, submissions and analysis of quality intelligence
- Experienced in end-to-end investigation of cases, particularly involving complex or organised crime.
- Possess strong interpersonal skills in order to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders; colleagues, partner agencies, victims, witnesses and suspects.
- Demonstrate sound knowledge of criminal law and procedure; particularly involving road traffic, acquisitive crime series and links to organised criminality
- Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the code of ethics, force policies and procedures and policing professional framework. Maintain standards of conduct and professionalism both within the organisation and when representing Sussex Police externally.

The role will carry a tenure of 2 years.
