The Role & Key Responsibilities

We are offering an exciting opportunity to become a Crime Scene Services Assistant and be part of the Forensic Investigations team. You will be chiefly responsible for keeping our CSI teams equipped, while helping us to gain and maintain our ISO accreditation through a variety of tasks and administrative functions.
Other tasks such as transportation of exhibits, cleaning of key facilities and equipment to a forensic standard and organising repair of technical equipment will all form part of this diverse and constantly evolving role.
The successful candidate will be based at Durrington, and have primary responsibility for the smooth running of this CSI Hub. Travel to other locations both in Surrey and Sussex, as well as out of Force will also be part of your duties. You may be expected to support other bases when needed.
You will be part of a small team of Crime Scene Services Assistants across the collaborated unit; based in Guildford, East Sussex and West Sussex and will be managed by the Senior CSI.
You will play a key role in ensuring the day to day running of our Forensic Services across Surrey and Sussex, able to work independently, be proactive and demonstrate flexibility as the role evolves and demand changes.
This is a part time role of 18.5hrs per week. There is a degree of flexibility when these hours are worked - specified hours/days can be discussed upon appointment. This is a Flexitime role with core hours between 0800 and 1800, Monday to Friday.
The role requires regular lifting, carrying and moving heavy materials using stairs.
Key Responsibilities:
- You will monitor and maintain stock levels of essential consumables, while maintaining ISO requirements. You will generate requisitions and reconcile delivered goods with orders made. You will communicate with suppliers and budget holders to rectify discrepancies, as well as balancing stock levels across the base sites.
- You will ensure CSI specific hardware is serviced and maintained, organising repairs and calibration where required.
- You will maintain facilities to ISO standards, undertaking regular as well as periodic deep cleaning of both rooms, vehicles and equipment.
- You will ensure personal protective equipment is effective and fitted correctly - undertaking annual testing in conjunction with operational staff.
- You will have responsibility for collecting exhibits from other stores and Scenes of Crime Bases across both of our Forces. You may on occasions be expected to take or collect exhibits from a laboratory or an expert for examination. The continuity and integrity of those exhibits is essential throughout any of these processes.
- You will gather data from different databases and software, presenting this in other formats where required and preparing documents for others to review.
- You will monitor various inboxes and calendars, responding to tasks and keeping records.
- You will need to gain a working knowledge of the Quality Standards, ISO17025 ,ISO 17020 and the Forensic Science Regulators Codes of Practice and Conduct.
- You will be involved in coaching and training new staff to this role.
Skills & Experience
Essential Criteria:
- GCSE Maths and English (pass or equivalent).
- Driving test - Full UK Driving Licence (Manual)
- Experience of working in an administrative role in a confidential environment.
- Computer literacy, including basic use of WORD & EXCEL
We would like applicants to have:
- Proven experience of working in a stores environment and knowledge of stock control audit processes
- Experience of following written procedures and using sound judgement to make decisions.
- Good organisational skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Experience of interrogating computer systems to obtain accurate results.
- The ability to communicate effectively and fluently with a range of people.
- Experience within a customer focused environment
- The ability to work on own and be self-motivated, as well as being a positive team player.
- A high degree of initiative in order to ensure that most problems and issues are resolved without the need to escalate.
