The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role

As a Coroner's Officer you will be required to investigate and record sudden and unexpected deaths.

You will manage your own workload and will assist HM Coroner in court duties and will attend inquests and post-mortem examinations, attending scenes of sudden death where appropriate.

You will need to work with a professional approach to deal with the families of victims of sudden or unexpected death, obtaining precise details with compassion and understanding in order that the cause of death can be ascertained.

You will be required to visit friends, relatives and associates of the deceased to obtain and record factual information for HM Coroner.

You will be working Monday to Friday at Hastings Police Station. Some of the working day may be outside normal office hours and some ‘call out' cover will be required on a rota basis, which includes weekends. The “on call” is shared with all of the Coroner's Officers across East Sussex Division

Key Responsibilities

You will be active in arranging and attending inquests, attending post mortems and be fully involved in a wide range of administrative and co-ordination activities for HM Coroner and Sussex Police.

You will be required to attend sudden deaths when necessary to assist in ensuring all evidence is secured and to work with the investigative team.

You will be acting as the single point of contact for bereaved families providing updates on the progress of the investigation and providing support where necessary.

You will set direction and investigate referrals to the Coroner’s Office, which will include gathering evidence, obtaining statements and conducting formal investigative interviews.

You will work alongside partner agencies and participate in multi-agency strategy discussions and case conferences representing Sussex Police and HM Coroner.

Skills & Experience

You will need to have highly developed interpersonal skills to deal with the stress and emotion arising from these situations and be able to obtain essential information as early as possible. Good written and verbal communication skills are also essential.

You should have a working knowledge of medical terminology to assist with contact between yourself, the local hospitals and medical staff and in order to present this information to HM Coroner.

Previous experience should include the ability to conduct an investigation and accuate recording of the actions and outcomes, which may include conducting interviews.

You must be able to participate in an on call rota acting as a single point of contact for any out of hours enquiries and attending scenes on behalf of HM Coroner
