The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role

Public visibility is essential for the success of the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner which is keen to reach out to as many of Surrey’s residents as possible, to ensure their priorities are understood and reflected in the policing services they receive.

This role is focused on building relationships with Surrey’s communities, extending the reach of the PCC’s office and building public awareness of our work. The post holder will be responsible for identifying, planning and organising initiatives and opportunities to engage more local residents and community groups in the work of the Police and Crime Commissioner.

This role will also provide support to the Policy Officer responsible for enquiries and complaints from members of the public.

Key Responsibilities

Assisting the Communication Manager to ensure a coherent, strategic approach is taken in communicating the work of the OPCC
Playing a key role in maintaining and further developing the OPCC presence across our social media platforms
Providing support in dealing with enquiries from the local, national and police industry media
Planning and managing engagement events for the OPCC
Providing support in dealing with enquiries and complaints from members of the public
Providing communication and engagement advice and briefings to the Commissioner and his team, as required
Designing and producing supporting promotional & communication material such as leaflets, graphics, posters and newsletters
Identifying and seizing opportunities for positive engagement to reach out to the communities of Surrey and engage them with the work of the OPCC
Evaluating the success of our communications and engagement activities

Skills & Experience

Degree or equivalent qualification
Strong written and verbal communications skills
Demonstrable knowledge of communication and community engagement techniques
Experience in using social media and ability to grow our reach across all platforms
Experience of communications planning and campaign development, reputation management and building relationships with key stakeholders
Experience in video editing, photography and using Wordpress
Ability to organise and manage public and stakeholder events
Experience of effective engagement and communication with different audiences
High level of planning and organisational skills with the ability to work under pressure, prioritise workloads and multi-task.
Ability to use an empathetic approach in one-to-one contact with members of the public
Understanding of the role of the PCC, their statutory requirements, the work of the wider office and Surrey Police in general.
