The Role
This is an exciting opportunity to work in East Sussex CID alongside other officer and staff supervisors.
CID is a dynamic department investigating both serious and complex and volume crime. It provides the opportunity to make a real difference for the staff you manage and the public whom we serve embodying the priorities of Sussex Police by Catching Criminals, Protecting the public and delivering an excellent service.
A separation of Serious and Volume crime is expected to take place in April 2023. If the successful applicant enters the post prior to this separation then they will commence work on CID. This role is based within the volume crime department and the successful applicant will move there as of the Go Live date.

Key Responsibilities
1. To oversee the recording of criminal offences in line with national rules and guidance. To deliver and supervise the delivery of investigative frameworks, policies, procedures and legislative requirements in a professional and ethical manner.
2. To supervise the Interviewing and processing of suspects in custody
3. To manage a mixed team of PIP 1 and 2 investigators and police officers; delivering high quality investigations whilst maintaining a healthy and supportive environment. Ensuring good performance management and development of people within their teams.
4. To manage the investigation of recorded crimes and incidents through evidence gathering
5. To oversee the preparation of evidential files for court and liaison with the Crown Prosecution Service
6. Where required to direct appropriate safeguarding activity including referrals to other agencies. This will include liaison and the influencing of partner agencies at a supervisory level to ensure that vulnerable people have effective safety plans in place.
7. To ensure that victims and witnesses are updated with the progress of the investigation and are provided with any necessary support and protection
8. To attend the scenes of serious crimes, and direct police resources in order to preserve evidence, protect people from harm, and identify and apprehend suspects.
9. To perform the role (in line with a given shift pattern) of night duty investigations supervisor – To maintain an overview of serious crimes and incidents that occur overnight, attending and directing resources as appropriate.
Skills & Experience
Without previous investigative experience this role would be aimed at a degree level or similar qualification. However, previous evidenced investigative experience to PIP level 1 or PIP level 2 is also acceptable.
PiP level 2 accreditation or equivalent experience in conducting investigations into serious crime.
If not already PiP2 accredited the candidate must have passed the NIE prior to appointment and be prepared to achieve PiP2 accreditation within 18 months.
An expert in crime policies and procedures relating to criminal investigation and particularly the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996;
Expertise in either PIP 1 or PIP 2 investigations which would include, interviewing or the supervising off interviews, prisoner processing and management and the setting of investigative lines of enquiry.
Experience of managing developing staff, goal setting and performance management of a team.
Excellent interpersonal skills with the confidence and ability to negotiate and influence others through verbal and written communication.
Must be capable of absolute discretion in handling matters of a personal, sensitive and confidential nature.
Ability to interpret information quickly and effectively in order to select the right course of action.
Excellent organisational, planning and prioritising abilities; Demonstrates confidence, credibility and resilience
Ability to independently exercise own judgement in a consistent manner, within confines of legislation and procedures.
