This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst continuing to be two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.


Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.


Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowance and hours.

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role

The Surrey and Sussex Police Joint Procurement team are looking to recruit a number of Buyers, on a permanent basis.


In this role you will undertake spot-buying, tenders or other types of procurements as necessary, alongside undertaking reporting and providing a front-line point of contact for the department. You will be pro-active with good organisational skills, customer focused but willing to challenge. You will ideally have good spreadsheet and word processing skills. Previous experience within a Procurement / Buying environment is ideal but not essential. You will be willing to study towards CIPS (Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply) and the department will support you with this.
The successful candidates will be employed by either Surrey or Sussex Police, with the option of being based at either Police Headquarters in Guildford or Lewes. Regular travel across the two counties, however, will be required with a considerable amount of time being spent at other locations across the Forces.

Key Responsibilities

The role will enable you to work with a variety of stakeholders across both Forces, other public sector organisations and suppliers. You will be responsible for managing and coordinating procurements on behalf of both Forces across a number of different categories, ensuring that all are compliant and completed in accordance with Force specific (Contract Standing Orders) and EU Procurement legislation requirements.
You will be expected to establish relationships with key stakeholders to ensure that contracting needs are identified and strategies are in place to meet the business objectives for Surrey and Sussex Police; identifying and implementing innovative sourcing approaches to the delivery of projects, in order to enhance levels of service and minimize costs, ensuring compliance with the overall Procurement Strategy and safeguarding against contractual and commercial risk.
