We are recruiting an Assurance Officer who will provide professional advice in respect of corporate governance arrangements to support the statutory oversight and scrutiny function of the PCC.

Responsible for conducting reviews and making decisions regarding assessments of police complaint processes which includes making recommendations and determining whether outcomes are reasonable and proportionate to address the matters under consideration.

The post is 37 hours per week, however job share will be considered. The position is based at Sackville House, Lewes [incorporating a hybrid model of combined home and office working arrangements].

The Role

The Office of the Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner (OSPCC) is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Assurance Officer to provide professional advice in respect of corporate governance arrangements to support the statutory oversight and scrutiny function of the Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC).

Key Responsibilities

You will support the Assurance Manager by recording, investigating and managing sensitive and confidential complaints against the Chief Constable.

You will be responsible for reviewing and considering complaint reviews (appeals) from members of the public – following the outcomes of complaints to Sussex Police – before making clear and reasoned judgements regarding the reasonableness and appropriateness of the outcomes.

You will co-ordinate and provide administrative preparation to support the Joint Audit Committee, Police Misconduct Panels and Police Appeals Tribunal processes on behalf of the PCC, whilst ensuring that all statutory requirements are met.

Recording and publishing the formal decisions made by the PCC and ensuring ongoing compliance with the Elected Local Policing Bodies (Specified Information) Order will be further responsibilities for the post holder.

Applications would be welcome from anyone with a background in complaints handling and investigations, legal and audit within the public sector or equivalent organisation.

Skills & Experience

Essential

▫ Educated to degree level or equivalent by experience.
▫ Proven experience of working in a governance or complaints handling environment within the
public sector or equivalent organisation.
▫ Experience of conducting investigations and handling complex complaints. Ability to use tact,
initiative and independent judgment within policy, procedural, and legal guidelines whilst
remaining calm in difficult situations.
▫ Recognised experience of working in a governance function, including managing committees,
misconduct hearings and appeals tribunals.
▫ Ability to influence, negotiate and make decisions.
▫ Pro-active, self-disciplined approach to tasks with the ability to work in a busy environment and
to tight deadlines.
▫ Outstanding oral and written communications. Strong interpersonal and listening skills.
▫ Strong organisational skills, taking personal responsibility for meeting targets, managing work
priorities flexibly in order to meet changing circumstances and deadlines.
▫ Demonstrating integrity, tact and diplomacy in handling confidential information.
▫ Sound knowledge of the statutory requirements of the PCC with the ability to understand and
correctly interpret the legislation to ensure compliance.
▫ Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with internal and external partners,
including the ability to challenge senior officers when necessary.
▫ Good levels of IT literacy, including advanced Microsoft Office skills.
▫ Ability to deal with members of the public sensitively.

Desirable

▫ Committed to continued professional development.
▫ Understanding of policing and police governance including the context in which the PCC operates.
▫ Experience of working in a political environment.
