This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst remaining two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.


Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.


Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowances and hours.

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role & Key Responsibilities

About us:

The Facilities team form part of the wider Estates and Facilities department, responsible for managing the built environment within the police owned estate, ensuring that the buildings remain compliant, safe and support the effective delivery of policing in Surrey and Sussex. The Facilities teams are responsible for ‘front-end’ service delivery of a wide range of Facilities Management (FM) services on behalf of both Surrey and Sussex Police Forces, supporting our operational officers and staff in delivering their respective services.

The role:

We are seeking an experienced Area Facilities Manager to lead our Surrey based FM teams and deliver a comprehensive range of soft FM services and oversee some hard FM activities. You will play a key role in ensuring that the working environments are compliant and safe; supporting the officers, staff and partners to deliver our core business of policing. You will be self-motivated to lead, develop and support your team of two Facilities Managers and sixteen Facilities Co-Ordinators. The team will work across a complex and diverse property portfolio where, working closely with your teams, you will lead by example, setting performance and cultural standards for them to follow. Overseeing the successful delivery of our ‘outsourced’ hard FM contract, you will develop an excellent working relationship with our service provider and contractors making sure that security and health & safety compliance is achieved at all times.
You will be responsible for compiling reports and data relating to you and your teams’ activities and performance, the built environment, health & safety compliance and other FM related activities.
Based in Surrey, you will become a member of our newly collaborated team supporting both Surrey and Sussex Police Forces and will work alongside two Area Facilities Managers in Sussex. You will play a pivotal role in developing and refining our FM services across the collaborated teams and will be responsible for reviewing our existing activities, processes and procedures to ensure that we develop consistent ‘best-practice’ procedures across all areas.

Key Accountabilities

• Lead, develop, coach, mentor and inspire staff to reach their full potential.
• Deliver a professional and efficient FM service to all those that interact with the police service.
• Drive consistency and best practice processes and procedures across all teams
• Provide safe, compliant and well-presented workplaces meeting the needs of our various stakeholders.
• Undertake regular site reviews and audits, identifying opportunities for investment, re-active and pro-active maintenance tasks and any health & safety non-compliances.
• Lead and promote a culture of health and safety, security and environmental compliance and best practice.
• Support the delivery of Capital projects (refurbishments, re-developments and disposals)
• Monitor team expenditure and financial forecasts across all FM budget lines. For full information about the role, please refer to the attached Job Description.

Skills & Experience

We are seeking someone who is positive, forward thinking and innovative with proven management skills who is ready to take on this exciting role and help us deliver the goals of the recent collaboration. The geographical spread, varying age and condition of our sites across both Surrey and Sussex requires you to have excellent communication, planning and organisation skills to strike the right balance of remote management whilst ensuring you are visible and accessible to all staff.

Ideally you will have:
• Experience of managing multiple sites
• An ability to prioritise own and team’s workload.
• Co-ordinate projects and business as usual activities
• Experience of effectively managing staff resources to meet the needs of the organisation.
• An ability to adapt and respond to changing priorities.
• Excellent communication, negotiation and customer service skills to influence and inform staff and officers of all ranks.
• Knowledge and understanding of technical FM relating to buildings and related assets.
• Relevant management and FM qualifications (as detailed within the JD). Training will be available for the right candidate if you do not already hold the qualification.
