This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst continuing to be two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.


Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.


Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowance and hours.

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role

Apprentice Motor Light Vehicle Technician

Are you a good team player, have a passion for motor vehicles but bored with the routine or need something with greater appeal and chance to gain a qualification - interested in working on some of the most modern, powerful and sophisticated cars and motorcycles in Police use?

If so, we are currently looking to recruit Apprentice Light Motor Vehicle Technicians at our workshops in Crawley Down.

Permanent contract – Flexitime: 37 hour 5 day Monday to Friday week. Up to …29 days annual leave, sick pay. Day release to college.


To be successful and join us in our challenging but satisfying role, you must be able to attend college on day release from the workshop for the duration of the NVQ levels 1, 2 and 3. Further to successful completion of the NVQ courses, you may be eligible to continue as an Improver Technician for the 4th year. This 4th year would be based full time in the workshop with further industry training available. You may then have the opportunity to progress over time to become an experienced and fully qualified member of the team.

Key Responsibilities

1. To assist workshop staff as required, to gain skills and experience i.e. under the direction of the mentor, Senior Technician or Workshop Manager. Other Technicians or staff may need to supervise the Apprentice for some elements of this training and development.
To undertake workshop duties as found necessary through the course of the working day.

2. Attend the nominated College and any other training or development courses as required.
To complete the training portfolio and other records to facilitate the apprenticeship and training.
To achieve the needed grades to move onto the next graduated stages of the apprenticeship scheme.
To keep and complete all records in a clear and timely manner.
To work in a safe manner, following good / safe working practices in line with the industry norm.

3. To complete any necessary documentation in a timely manner, this could include vehicle history data, records or IT based input.

4. To work in a tidy and orderly manner, taking responsibility for a clean workshop area and environment. This is in keeping with Health and Safety requirements but also to good working practices in keeping with industry norm.

5. To undertake other duties to the grade and character of work as required including the duties of similar but lesser graded posts.

Skills & Experience

Level 4 or C (or above) GCSE
English and Math’s
(or equivalent)
These are required to gain access to College and Apprenticeship


To be able to provide attention to detail and willing to learn new skills and an aptitude for understanding of the motor vehicle environment. An interest in technology.
Reliable, trustworthy, proactive and motivated to get a job done, working either as part of a team or independently.
To have a helpful attitude and the ability to interact with colleagues and customers in a positive and professional manner.
Ability to provide good customer service.
